Paracetamol doesn't cure a person's common cold or flu.It is your body immune system cure you.In fact, fever is good to you as it increases WBC & antibodies. So try not to take pain/fever killer when your body temperature is below 39 degree (high fever). What u need to do is to rest if u have common cold & flu.
My suspicion why some ppl who get dengue fever and their illness turns serious is because they take paracetamol when they are in the earlier stage of the illness.I believe the medicine impedes one's body immune system to fight the dengue virus.I'm not a doctor.Edited by PRP 08 Aug `07, 5:32PM

What u said is strange indeed.I think almost all doctors prescribe fever(pain)killer to patients for flu orcoomon cold.Yes,they say "take it when necessary'.What is "necessary"?I think patients understand it as when they have fever.

Pain killer kills pain.
Antibodies kill the bodies that cause harm
Take more pain killer, it will take even more to kill more pain the next time.
That's why painkillers is a so called one-pill fix all solution because it blocks all pain but not the cause.
therefore, contrary to TS claims about malaria, it is not exactly true.
So it doesn't really impedes the immune system. Just tricking the body that it doesnt feel any pain.Edited by kivine 14 Aug `07, 8:55PM

The above statement is correct. Paracetamol is treats symptoms, but does not have antiviral or antibacterial properties
In fact, fever is good to you as it increases WBC & antibodies.
The above is false. WBC reactions and antibody production are an immune response to bacterial/viral invasion. They are not a response to fever. In fact, fever is a consequence of interleukin production by the body in response to microorganisms.

I disagree. By all means take paracetamol within the dosage limit when febrile, to alleviate the accompanying symptoms (headache, body ache, feeling of general unwell-ness). It does no harm, and greatly reduces suffering

Taking paracetamol does not impede the immune system. However, taking paracetamol perhaps might mask the symptoms of dengue, at least in the earlier stages.
I AM a doctor, albeit not an infectious diseases specialist. I did however learn enough in medical school to know your "message", though well meaning, is incorrect and may mislead others who don't know better.
Medicine is a complex field best left to the experts, no? After all, when my car breaks down I let my mechanic do his thing and keep my mouth shut

Are u very certain that taking pain(fever)killer doesn't impede the immune system?
I believe one benefit of fever is it would make the person feel sick and so he would rest.Resting would help him to recover from flu.Is this right?Edited by PRP 16 Aug `07, 4:54PM

I didn't say pain(fever)killer is useless.
Isn't it true thatI said "don't take Panadol when one dosen't have high fever? If one has high fever, there would be a necessity to reduce the body temperature.Edited by PRP 17 Aug `07, 7:48PM
