    • ".........Ditch that talk in your head about protecting the nation. Who are we protecting the nation from? Who are we actually protecting? A nation is merely a group of people. Are we protecting our families, our friends? The police employ takes care of that. No, we are serving a far more inglorious role, undignified and unbecoming.

....So it takes low-cost slave labour to provide this rudimentary defence, primarily for the State itself and NOT its citizens,....."

    • When you run into water and bridge issues with Malaysia, you need a naval force that conducts an exercise in a nearby island. An exercise that gets published in the front page of the Straits Times. On the next page, you need the Straits Times to publish that at a certain timing (same timing as the naval exercise) communication lines in certain parts of Johor was down.

Will we ever be involved in a war ? Maybe not. Do we still need National Service ? Absolutely.

I don't question the need for ns much(well maybe the nuke as a defence mechanism might work). But its still very much a liability and forced labour to the persons being conscripted.

especially the case for pple stuck with doing ndp or some other duties that don't really have defence bearings or can be done by any one.

    • its not the ns system thats wrong but rather the system and mindset whereby NS men in singapore (prone to a long reservists) are not fully appreciated by their employers who would rather employ someone else who doesn't have to be away couple of days a year for reservists for the next 15yrs!! • I disagree with the blogger. If according to him, when should we have soldiers then? When Singapore gets invaded?

That guy needs to read up Singapore history and learn what happened more than sixty years ago when we did not have soldiers to guard our lands, and when we had to leave our lives in the hands of untrained soldiers. Stupid bugger.

I won't argue they have improved. but just because they are better doesn't mean it is good now. Still lots of improvements to be made.

    • Alamak..... same topic again.

      Slavery =

      1) No ROD date on your 'service'.... ever. Till you die.
      2) No pay whatsoever.....
      3) No 'Rights' (rest, getting beaten up, holiday, food... etc) whatsoever....
      4) No medical service.....
      5) No weekend off.....
      6) No nothing.....

      National Service =

      1) Everyone have a given date till the time he/she finish service.
      2) You got allowance from SAF (no much)
      3) If any of the sergent even dare to punch or hit you..... the sergent could be charge....
      4) I was one of those MC kings.... Mr. Green
      5) Enjoy my weekend off like most ppl.
      6) Was a regular..... SAF paid for my NTC3 & NTC2..... got paid some more.

National Service is service to THE NATIONAL...... not PAP. This is the SAME NATIONAL that your family lives in..... if and when someone attack S'pore. The attacker will not just attack PAP supporter & leaves Anti PAP ppl alone.

If doing your National Service is too 'Hard' on you..... please leave S'pore as soon as possible..... go to some paradise country of your chosing..... If we can't depend on you during peace time.... ain't you just going to failed us during war times..... Confused

    • To be truth, if given a choice to opt-out, I sure alot of Singaporeans would opt-out. But if pay is million per year, most would consider signed on but not me. Wink

i'm not talking about comfort. its other things. like confinement? the extra military laws imposed, certain jobs and vocations, some functions.

    • NS is okay in my view, but 2 years is too long.

They should shorten it to 1 year+ in the future.
