    • Looking at Banquet outlets, I think the opposite is true. The apartheid lines are blurring.

    • I don't see how that would inconvenient any of the races. Most of us have no diet restrictions... dictating that non-Halal food shouldn't be in school canteens isn't an issue.

    • What's next? No selling of alcoholic beverages and tobaccos during the fasting month?

If one does not eat pork for hygeinic or religious reason, it doesn't mean that he/she cannot touch pork, does it?

There's no reason to avoid dogs too. If one can keep a dog to guard his/her property as allowed by the religion, why is it that he or she is not allow to have physical contact with it?

      These restrictions are baffling.

    • Non-Halal food shouldn't be a problem to them if they are not eating it

Prohibiting Non-Halal food in a canteen is going for the extreme

    • in any country with muslims, there's always halal and non halal food. It is not only in Singapore.

If such minor thing can divide Singapore, Singaporeans are really uncultured.

I would. I dont really care what you eat. I don't like it myself when friends have to restrict their diet just because they have to be thoughtful of me, thus I choose to only go eat out with friends sometimes.

Well, Non-Halal food doesn't mean that one cannot eat with Muslim friends

It's not that we are asking them to eat.

Usually we don't eat pork when we eat with our Muslim friends out of respect, but that doesn't mean the food we eat have to be Halal.

    • when u eat non-halal food, by right muslims are not allowed to sit at the same table.

do refer to the link above. this is due to concerns over cross contamination and the smell of pork.

that is why i bring up the question. which is more important to you, eating pork, and being able to sit with ur muslim friends.

fortunately they now have all halal food courts like banquet.

but some are calling to boycott them

    • seriously, pork is more important...

but if my friends have serious objections to it, then probably i can avoid pork while with them...

Well I think having a choice is important.

In a place which has halal and non-halal food, I can choose to eat halal food with my muslim friends.

If non-halal food is banned, that choice is taken away from me.

I do think it's understandable why people want to boycott halal only restaurants. They are afraid that their ability to choose non-halal food will be taken away from them.

    • It goes both ways. Our Muslim friends have no objections of us eating non-Halal food in front of them, nor is there a problem sharing the same table with them if we are eating pork.

The same goes for us. We don't eat non-Halal food in front of them...

Give and take a little... besides... what's so bad about having just Halal food in the canteen?

it's the lack of choice.... as you say, there is give and take among friends...

but when u take away the choice, then it is basically forcing the other party's point of view upon yourself.... and nobody likes that... hence, the uproar...

I thought the issue here is that our Muslim friends DO have objections due to the possibility of cross contamination and smell. So there is a problem sharing a table with them if we are eating pork.

But anyway, saying that Muslims have to objections to us eating non-Halal food in front of them, and saying that out of consideration we don't eat non-Halal food in front of them, is contradictory. Eating non-Halal food in front of a Muslim becomes a consideration only because there are objections.

What so bad about having just Halal food in the canteen is that it takes away choice. It takes the values of one community of people and imposes it on another.
