the hokkien are but not many hakka and contonese. this could be due to several reasons such as certain cities in kwangtung province like dongquan is developing very furiously and is able to absord the cantonese and hakka workers surrounding it. another reason could be intentional planning by the gahmen. for reasons best known to themselves the garmen seem to conduct their scholarship drives only in the northern states.

As a Thai, I want to share my experience too. Most of the Mainland Chinese who keep coming to Thailand are from the provinces other than Guangdong, Fujian, and Hainan where most of our grandparents were from. Most of these mainlanders I have encountered these days are the natives of Shanghai, Beijing, Tianjin, Anhui, Hunan, Yunnan, .... well technicallly from all over China but not from Guangdong, Chaoshan or Fujian.
There is one reason I noticed and I am talking about Thailand only...... There are a growing number of local Thai girls (those with darker complexion) going to study mandarin in the mainland. China is running short of young female population while Thai girls are good at hooking up (and a certain thing that follows after) with foreigners. Thailand is already a very open and extremely free-sex country although it is politically incorrect to openly say so in this so-called 'buddhist' country. In the meantime, Chinese, Koreans, and Japanese or namely North Asians have increasingly become their favourites. My girlfriend told me that, among Thai girls these days, anyone who can hook up with North Asian men get higher scores (打分) than with Thai men!

northern china is always sending worker down to southern china.
during 1985, hong kong are the only few export channel for china mfg.
thus southern china has more factories.
northern china are mostly state-owned factories,and they are always within near railway lines that mostly travel toward hong kong.
