SIngapore may always attract the businesses but attracting workers for the businesses is more important.this is the reason on why min wage is important.

Whats more important is the the relation of the country's social polices that are tied in with the economy and workfforce and pretty much everything else as well

This is where singapore is severely lacking. There is an unbalanced system in place which will rear its ugly head in times of economic downturn.

I agree that a country like singapore needs to look at sustainable systems of governance rather than one which is fragile and changing ..

singapore always maintained its preference for Businesses than the workers but this will have the negative impact. Eventually discontendted workers means a disadvantage for the business as well as productivity may be affected. What goes around comes around, as per saying.

I talked to a few foreigners who have worked in singapore and they say its not a good place to work especially for the skilled workers in the lower strata .

Even now in Australia, severe shortage of labour is In. but lots of people are always trying to come in to work because of the system in place it has.

Australian wages are 3-4 times higher than Singapore, if you are talking about increasing taxes with the current wages, I think alot of the poor will suffer.

i think what our govt does is relying on foreign MNC to set up biz here.

they can still do it by cutting down on corporate tax but introducing a min wage + higher taxation. This way the burden of taxation is offloaded from the companies and passed on tot he citizens. In return the citizens will have social benefits from this taxation.

Thing is... the inefficienct bureacracy takes too long to really sieve and help out those Singaporeans who really needs help... And this is happening in a country with a population of only 3.5 mil staying within Singapore, with near to half being non-Singaporeans somemore.

It is rubbish to say that the government/town council has too many things to do, because their main objective should be only one thing, which is care for the people.

For me, I wont be so keen to be heavily taxed for my hard-earned money to support the lazy bums in our society. Unless you are talking those people who are really in need of help.

Of course nothing works well without proper regulation. Given the mentality of singaporeans, many will try to claim unemployment benefits...we can do the model without some of the liberal forms of the western taxation system.

Then they will derive more revenues and give out zero welfare if start start adopting western style models of taxation, making citizens even poorer.

The need for western models of taxation is to generate revenue to sustain their welfare programmes. But in Singapore welfare has been turned into a dirty word by P4P politicians. Why do we still have charitable organisations if welfare is deemed bad by P4P politicians?

Selfishness prevails in the Singaporean society, most feel that money spent on helping the less privilege is a bad thing.
