Reform Party inauguration dinner
Posted by admin on July 12, 2008

The newly registered Reform Party held its inauguration dinner on Friday 11 July at Fortunate Restaurant, Toa Payoh Central.
The turnout at the dinner was impressive, with over 40 tables filled. There were over 400 guests including members of all Opposition parties.
In an impressive display of unity and solidarity, Opposition party chiefs stood side by side on stage with garlands around their necks to give a resounding cheer to the return of veteran politician and Reform Party Secretary-General J.B. Jeyaretnam.
Workers’ Party’s Mr Low Thia Khiang, Singapore People’s Party’s Mr Chiam See Tong, National Solidarity Party’s Mr Sebastian Teo and Singapore Democratic Party’s Dr Chee Soon Juan were amongst those on stage with JBJ and Reform Party Chairman Mr Ng Teck Siong.
JBJ gave an hour-long address enumerating the various setbacks Singaporeans are facing, including the rising cost of living, increasing wage gap and lack of freedom of speech.
He ended with a rallying call to Singaporeans to join his cause. ‘Come walk with me,’ he said, to loud cheers from his guests. (ST, 12 July)
His call garnered at least one supporter — 49-year-old hawker Teoh Eng Bee.
‘Every party has different beliefs. I have joined this one because I believe in reform,’ said Mr Teoh, who became the Reform Party’s first ordinary member. (ST, 12 July)
The list of 10 names in the party’s pro-tem committee was also made public.
Apart from Mr Jeyaretnam, it features five former members of other Opposition parties, including Mr James Teo, formerly from the Workers’ Party. The four political newbies include retiree Lim Meng Jock, realtor Amy Lui and businessmen Alan Mah and Balraj Naidu.
The party also disclosed that its logo will be the sun.
‘We chose it because it’s a source of energy, it gives people hope and when the sun appears, darkness disappears,’ said Reform Party organising secretary Edmund Ng. (ST, 12 July)
