Singapore drops Eurofighter from jet bid - source
LONDON/PARIS, Apr 18 (Reuters) Singapore has dropped the Eurofighter combat jet from consideration as it prepares to announce the winner of a 1 billion dollar order, an industry source told Reuters today.
The Rafale jet from France's Dassault and the F-15 from Boeing Co. remain in contention, but the source said his firm had been advised the Eurofighter was out.
The three bidders declined to comment.
The Singapore competition is pivotal because Boeing needs orders for the F-15 to ensure continued production, while Dassault and Eurofighter hunt for their first export orders from beyond Europe.
The Eurofighter consortium includes top European defence firms BAE Systems, Airbus parent EADS and Italy's Alenia Aeronautica.
The consortium has mounted a concerted effort to win the Singapore contract, flying two of the jets out to Singapore last June accompanied by Royal Air Force cargo and refuelling planes.
French newspaper La Tribune had reported earlier in the day that Dassault and Boeing were the only remaining contenders for an order expected to include 20 jets.
Boeing won a previous showdown against Dassault when South Korea opted for the F-15 in 2002.
La Tribune quoted several sources close to the issue saying that the island state would announce a preferred bidder at the end of June or beginning of July and would aim to conclude negotiations by the end of the year or early 2006.

hmm...agreed...no offence to anyone from china...but i do find their upgrading of their army abit suspect...you don buy so many weapons unless you're planning something like an att for example....and it's veri obvious no one's gonna play john rambo and take on the PLA so maybe the eagle may be used in a conflict against china???

Under what circumstance do we see ourselves involved in a conflict against China??? when China come down to south china sea to attack singapore??

If there is a war in the Taiwan Straits, whoever owns the Straits will have a big influence on whether China gets her supplies.
I'd bet that in such an event, we might see PLAN warships trying to secure the Straits for their own purposes, thus possibly setting us Malay Archipelago states into a conflict with her.We are very tied into the fate of North Asia, if you look really hard enough into the political and military dimensions are work here, plus taking into account our relationship with the United States, which sees us as a vdery important forward logistics HQ in South and North Asia.
They are basing more troops and aircraft at Guam these days..And it's definitely due to the rising tension.
Take a look at our RSN's increasingly bluewater plans and strategy.Add in our air-to-air refueling capability, which only we have amongst our neighbours..throw in the fact that we are getting our Frigates anti-missile missile capability..
We're definitely trying to be a force capable of defending the Straits.Whoever the enemy might be...we won't know for sure..but I think if there is an external military threat to the Straits, I'd be glad to see RSAF Eagles and Vipers flying CAP alongside RMAF SU-30s and F/A-18E Super Hornets in the South China SeaEdited by LazerLordz 19 Apr `05, 6:38PM

China is a big threat to singapore...who knows?
They may pre-empt CNB...CNB is used as a port for incoming american naval carriers..from middle east rushing to defend taiwan..
if CNB gets attacked...USA may lose some significant capability...as for a carrier battle group..
If you all noticed, military planners will often look at the bigger picture 10/20 years from now..20 Eurofighters may not even be enough to counter the threat from China..

Key decision may not lies with Singapore..
but as to allowing US naval warships based in middle east >>malacca straits...to travel towards the taiwan straits..will make alot of difference in the war..
Cause US forces are primarily tied up in middle east...and some bases in japan and korea..and pacific ocean..
Anyway China is going to hit the target of 1,000 modern military jet fighter planes..
I suggest over the next 10-15 years..singapore could just keep 40 eurofighters and 40 F-35 with 60 F-16 Blk 52+ upgraded with israeli avionics..spreaded even in our overseas bases etc..
coupled with the current amount, i think we should be ready to handle threats from China..
Malaysia and Indonesia might not invade singapore...there is nothing to gain..
not land..not natural resources..but 4 million pple who will be very angry..
But if China invades and bombs CNB...they can get a few weeks delay while the chinese naval ships bombard TW..
