    • It looks too long and moduler to be the  Aster 15.

The launch signature looks more like harpoon the RIM-116 RAM.

      RAM launch signature less flame.

      Should be Harpoon.

    • this is the second frame of the unknown missile.

this cannot be the harpoon...considering the absence of fins along the missile body and the lack of a long trail of black smoke during booster phase of a harpoon missile.

the following two pictures are harpoon firing from the formidable.... notice the numerous fins along the entire length of the harpoon missile and the long black trail.

    • Compare the outline of the missiles in both pictures. So far this seems the closest fit in terms of missile outline.

    • Correct me if I am wrong. I do recalled that our Formidable frigates are arm with the below weaponry but not the RIM-116 RAM Rolling Airframe Missile.

      - Boeing Harpoon anti-ship missiles

      - MBDA Aster 15 surface-to-air missiles

      - Oto Melara 76mm gun

      - Eurotorp A244-S Mod 3 torpedoes

    • Wah Tripwire. Me longtime never visit. 1st post i see is yours eh. Urgh, Im still having problem logging.

Its not RAM. I believe it`s a NGDS decoy. Correct me if Im wrong.

      Download this file; www.sagem-ds.com/pdf/en/D1068.pdf

Compare the cross-section of the projectile to the cross-section of the decoys.

By the way, the decoys are pretty damn good. The French are relying on them as a point defence system in place of systems like the RAM i think. And the Formidable do orginate from France. shade.png

However, this does not mean that the RSN will not incorporate other weaponry to enhance the defensive capabilities of the Formidable frigate in the future. Just look at the upgrades done to RSN warships over the years. But you already know that of course.

    • i have thought of that possibilities... but there are 3 problem.

      1. the huge fire ball at the initiation of missile launch seems rather unusual for a decoy launch system.

      2. if you look at the video... the missile after launch clearly (looking at the tail fins) is spinning.

      3. a second part of the missile video clearly shows the missile going off to a high parabolic trajectory like a SAM.

    • 2nd frame shot doesn't look like a SAM. A missile that near to the ship should still be in its boost-stage.   If its a RAM, it would most likely boost all the way to target. I think its most likely the NGDS as well. biggrin.png

    • I would expect RSN to install Typhoons or similar weapons around the hangar area as the Formidable`s rear is pretty much exposed to small arms fire. This would give her a 360 degree coverage in terms of protection from small littoral threats together with the Super Rapid in front.

    • After searching e internet i believe it is a Harpoon SSM after all, but not e "normal" Harpoon but e anti-ship cruise missile version which lacks e middle finsicon_mrgreen.gif

    • E missile's range remains @ 120KM but has GPS/INS + datalink for land attack use & better capability vs ships very near landmass

BTW our frigates can carry up to 32 harpoonsicon_mrgreen.gif

    • Why so complicated analysis?

      Its straightforward...its a Harpoon.

The Aster and Baraks are vertical launched....torpedoes are dropped into water...therefore, from launching attitude and size/shape...its a Harpoon la, so simple.

    • harpoon goes off at 45 degree.... that missile is around 20 degrees.

furthermore... the unknown missile's entire body is spinning... harpoon never spins.

    • Well, I think that whatever angle the missile flew out from the canister is relative to the picture. If you notice the height of the picture, if u shear it off a little more, the angle will be even lesser, if you don't crop it that much, the angle seems larger. Besides, if it was RAM missiles, it should have been widely reported on eg. SPIRI
