Everyone knows the 5.56mm was forced upon NATO (and by extension most other militaries outside NATO) by the US. Some have argued this was a big mistake and we should go back to larger calibre rounds. There are grumbles that going back to 7.62mm might be the way to go in order that lethality can be increased.
The reality is no army in the world is seriously looking at issuing 7.62 as standard because that means you will increase the combat load of already overloaded soldiers. That is not to say however, that it is not doable; that would be utter nonsense - The British Army used 7.62 in its FN FAL prior to being forced to adopt 5.56 and consistently won battles.
What I am trying to get at is that it isn't a simple argument.
What say you? There are several new (ish) calibres in development. If you know about them feel free to enlighten us!

I would like to score bullseye first with my 5.56mm before i proceed with the 7.62mm. if i can even do that bullseye thing with the 5.56mm i might as will shoot paper bullet. so TS tell me are you able to even secure a marksman badge on your shoulders? otherwise shut the fuk up befor i shaft my nick into your mouth

5.56mm (.223) is only suitable to defend yourself against rabbits.
But the rounds weigh about 1/3 as much as a standard 7.62 NATO (.308) round.
It is also much faster and cheaper to train new recruits with pop guns such as the M-16 than it is to train troops with a traditional big bore battle rifle.
In my opionion magazine capacity is no substitute for good marksmanship. That's why I carry a 1911 .45ACP instead of a 9mm.
I hope that the US military will switch to some of the heavier more modern battle rounds. And leave the 5.56mm in the past where it belongs.

The problem with shooting steel or steel-jacketed projectiles in a firearm is you are going to increase the wear in the bore of the barrel by several orders of magnitude vis-a-vis traditional copper-jacketed projectiles, as steel is significantly harder than copper.

on one side of the balance is better stopping power...on the other side is the capacity to carry more bullets.
which side to tilt the balance depends on what would its use be...its like there is no use giving a sniper 1000 rounds when all he needs is 1....no use giving an infantry man 20 rounds when he needs 1000 to clear a large area of enemy combatants.
5.56mm is in the middle(I think)...so I guess I am fine with it as the standard issue.

Don't look down on the bow and arrow. I can hit a human at 100m with those.I fully agree that the 7.62 has a hitting power advantage. But I disagree with the 5.56 being called to be only suitable for shooting rabbits. If you'd like to volunteer to be a rabbit, I'd gladly demonstrate.
