Is it appropriate to approach a girl and ask for her number?

  Is it courteous and polite to do so? If it isnt, are there other ways to go about getting to know the girl better? Some of my poly classmates did that and they were rejected in a curt manner....any advice?

  Hmm... i would like to ask abt this oso~ coz one of my friend(Dun look good), wants to woo a gal from Burgarking~ He dunno her, and i dun think she even seen him b4~ he says he wanna pass a letter to her... I'm like arghh, if i'm the gal, i'll be scared.

  Some of my cb classmates when to "help" me ask for that girl's number when I just gave an honest comment that she looked beautiful. They approached the girl and told her that I was interested in knowing her better.
  
  The girl took one look at me (my back facing her) and said "Im not interested"....maybe she used to ppl going up to her and asking for number.

  That depends on whether she deems you as an "appropriate" person to give her number to?
  
  But I'd second what missqi said - if you ever want her number, the only decent way to obtain it is to approach her personally and not through some proxies...

  Be there, done that and being rejected 3 years ago when my friends suggests me to ask the girl directly for contact number.
  
  My suggestion is: don't do it unless you have links with that girl like she is your friend's friends.
  
  Another alternative way: Try to make friends with her first but don't rush.
