I think your problem primarily stems from your not knowing what you plan to do. Put it this way, even if you went to RJC and did well enough for your A levels to go to the top universities on a scholarship, you probably still wouldn't know what you want to do in the long run(I'm not talking about which course of study to pursue here).Originally posted by I need help:So should I study now and see what I want to do later or study with my goal in mind?
It's true that I don't really know what I want to do. I've only been to RJC once, but I like the place a lot.
Maybe I'm being extremely shallow here by admitting that I want to go in mostly becase of the name. But surely the reputation of RJ couldn't have come from nothing, right? There has to be some substance inthe place, the culture.
I personally have seen ample examples of people falling in this category whereby they go for something exclusively for the prestige offered at that point in time, only to realise later on they could have been more productive pursuing an alternate course of action. If you're considering accepting scholarships for your tertiary studies, I suggest you think twice if you're not entirely convinced a job with the scholarship-awarding organisation is where your future should be - trust me, you wouldn't want to waste 6 years (is that still the length of bond for an overseas scholarship?) of your prime slogging away envying your college peers living a dream life(which would most likely be the case if you went to what you would consider a "decent university" abroad)...

I'm a shallow person, I don't disagree.
But even so, I still want to go to RJC. I know that being in RJC does not automatically give me good results. The competitive culture there may push me to good results, or perhaps it may ruin me, as some of you are certain of.
But it is exactly because I'm a shallow person that I want to get in. That is my sole justification for wanting to get in.
With that said, I disagree with being disgusted on a lower level if I do get nto AC. If on March 6 I do get put into AC, I'll move on. I'm whining now, but I don't think I will still be on the day itself.
Actually, I don't know if I will. I can only find out on the day itself.
Thanks walesa, I'll try to see what is most suitable for me the long run. I don't think I'll want to consider a bond though. Bond periods are far too long for me.
fudgester, I'm sorry I've wasted your time. I realise now that nothing is going to really help me until the results come. But thanks anyway.

The way I see it, if the prospect of being in AC does not give you pause, then you wouldn't even be whining here in the first place.
You said yourself that you're being shallow. But far from trying to change that self-destructive mindset (trust me when I say that it is self-destructive), I see that you choose to feed it.
Good luck to you when you enlist with that kind of mindset. You may say that it's a long way from now, but two years in JC will pass by in the blink of an eye. -

What's wrong with other 'lesser' JC's? In the end its about you, not the school. If you cant make it into RJ maybe it's a sign that maybe competing at that level is not for you, and I say that from experience. My 4 years in RI were rather miserable because academically, I was below average at best which didnt do my confidence any good (cos I topped my pri sch PSLE

Eventually, realising my O results weren;t good enough to get me into RJC without lengthy appeals, I decided to enrol in a certain JC in serangoon central beginning with 'N'. Guess what, that was the best choice I made thus far, I found myself doing better and appreciated a slower, more kampong and friendly environment, even picked up a new life long hobby... that changed my life forever. Most importantly, I still managed to get into the course I wanted in NUS. I could have gotten there all beaten and battered by appealing into RJC, but instead I went to NUS a more balanced and prepared individual.

U want to compare to see who is more depressed? 3 years ago I got my 'A' level results, & the results weren't good enough to enter the univ. Then I had to go back to poly & start all over again, & now I'm applying for a place in univ for the 3rd time. Depressed, not even ur turn to say it. And wat's the diff between other JCs, after 2 years the 'A' levels the same what. Ultimately it's the attitude that counts, even if one is from RJC & if his/her working attitude sucks, it's still of no use. yes, RJC peeps do have a headstart; they think at the speed of light, have more brains to solve difficult probs etc etc...
im not starting a RJC-bashing session here, but quite a number of them do label you by your school, and just them can make your RJC life a misery. i think i told you about my friend in SYO who DSA-ed into RJC and got scorned for it.
at the end of it all, you will be wondering why you did the things you did, why you made such choices, and why did your mind run on one sole track.
look beyond the names, look beyond school life, you will realize that power, prestige, fame and cash are only material.
broaden your vision range and you can appreciate the scenery around you.
if you are posted into ACJC, open your eyes wide and appreciate the fact that AC is known for the girls.
even YJC can make a 17-pointer produce 4 As and make its way from the bottom ranks to top 10. i guess no matter where you land, you can still get 4 As. but you shouldn't be asking, now what? it should have been planned beforehand, complete with back-ups.
life is never complete without alternatives.

To TS, now that Im much older, I can say that which JC u were from hardly counts, that is not what people judge you by and we hardly raise the topic anyway. Just met a friend over CNY who went through RJC, some friends of mine who went through RJC are not doing all that well now, its by no means a guarantee of success. -
AC is known for the good looking people, but I'm not handsome.
I still haven't got a concrete plan for my future yet, but I can see that apparently JC doesn't make a difference.

i won't say the school environment is totally irrelevant to shaping your personality, thinking etc. because we do get influenced by our environment, friends, etc in some way. but if someone thinks that by going to a supposedly top school, that guarantees his/her success in life, i will say MY FOOT ! ask any one who has more life / working experience and they'll tell you that.
probably the school's brand name will get you the ooo's and ahhh's initially from people who hardly know you. but over time when they get to know you, its your character and ability that count.
flip through history and you'll easily find successful people who didn't make it to any so-called elite schools. -
