How can i convince him?

actually whenever i wanna post a topic here, i feel like an idiot..as if this place isnt sad enuf with everyone pouring out their sad memories and i am here adding to the pain...

anyway my dad is staunchly aganist my idea of buying a DSLR,which is not just a cam but a system of lenses,filters,flashlights,etc. he wants me to buy HP or kodak's prosumer cams because he is those highly resistant to technology. yet he is using a manual SLR from his days.
we have gone into many discussions and some heated. on a few occasions, it was on the brink of becoming an argument and stopped progressing that way because i kept quiet to some of this points which i felt were fundamentally wrong. it would have been better if we discussed different aspects but we go in circles because though he physically listens to me he doesnt take my points into account. and he challenges me based on concepts, technologies and whatever not from his years.
i am planning to buy a DSLR this july or later but he has been pushing for me to buy those prosumer cams as mentioned earlier. nothing wrong with those cams but i feel i wanna push the technological limits that are barriers to me.
i do want to take a peaceful approach to this though. -

do you NEED one?
a good dSLR with all the stuff like lenses and stuff will set you back around $10k
think about it... it's a few months' pay... and it isn't easy to earn money these days.. -

i already know what i want. problem is how to convince him.
there are some technical limitations of a prosumer cam that a DSLR can breakthough. -
who's paying for it? if it's your dad, can he easily pay for it? DSLR not cheap leh -

and finally splashed out around a total of $1700 for my Sony F717 and .. and it hurt my pocket for ages...
now, the question BEGS to be answered...
what are you going to use the dSLR for? and how far are you going to go with the lenses/filters and stuff?
from what i know, you just realised that you can stack filters..
clearly, there is much to learn before starting on SLRs..
again.. S$10k is a lot of money to splash out!
and mostly, it's the driver, not the equipment..
lastly, it was curt, but to the point.. master in the post above was dead right! -

[/b] therefore i have only 1 filter to work with...save for the UV filter, it was only when i played ard with the extra filter then i realised it.
for the DSLR question it is the same as asking why do i need a camera? there are 2 parts to the Q u mentioned. first my cam does have alot of limitations esp on the pic quality, resolution, acessories,etc
quality, D70 beats my cam hands feet and heads down
resolution, many times i didnt take part in contests because the min resolution is 3MP and above and it's usually way above. btw mine is 2MP.
Digital noise. even at ISO100, there are more noise than sand on yr feet after walking through a playground barefooted.
acessories, my cam cant attach a damn ext flashlight because it doesnt have a hotshoe for it. when i am taking macro shots, sometimes i see the need for a macro ring flash....but i cant attach it at all.
nightshots. at best,8secs. cant even see a night when there's low light, when $500 nikon digital cams can AF-L and take well-exposed pics. my attempt at taking car trails was pathetic with 8secs. only got trails 2/3 the length of the pics at best.
lastly, my aim is to push my skills to a higher limit and reach a certain level at sometime in future.

I understand your desire to get a DSLR but DSLR got its limitations too when compared to prosumer cameras.
Have u either look into Minolta range of prosumer cameras A1 and A2?? Their anti shock function would enable u to get a decent night shot without tripod...i personally got one A1 myself...
But of course DSLR is much more powerful than prosumer camera
and if u really think u will be much more comfortable with DSLR camera, just get it.
PHotography is not only just about camera or functions...u just have to be comfortable with it.. and play with its pros and cons.
Nth is perfect...

hmmm the AS is wonderful..
it eliminate my plan to get a tripod
haah...
u noe when u shot building lights at night, with my film slr i have to mount it only to a tripod to capture the shot...but with AS Minolta cameras,,,i just hand held it...
but something i dun like...
if u are into protrait photography.. i really suggest u get a DSLR
cos with my A1, i go maximun zoom and open biggest apperture size... my background could never get into the blur effect like my film slr.... but of course...u can edit with photoshop lah... but i lazy..
bascially there no other issue.. except for iso speed noise pah...
i only shot it at iso 100...the rest can see nooise liao... =(
