Surname Problem... pls help

I understand that there is an olden saying that ppl with the same surnames can't marry otherwise their child will be retarded. my question here is that, what if the chinese surname is different but the english one is the same? does it mean they still can be together? or does the olden saying still applies? pls help enlighten me. many thanks.

nope i mean take for example, english surname is Koh but there are different chinese surnames for koh, like Xu and Gu. so does it mean still can be together?

the dialect name sometimes coincidentally have same spelling......
like teo can be zhang or zhao.....wong can be wang or huang......
to be "safe", spend some time to trace ur family roots loh.....now quite popular.....ppl even travel to china to visit ancestors graves and see their hometown....... -

Hmm...I still remember that long time ago...there was a few couples who had different surname but still cannot get married.
For example, liang san bo and zhu ying tai...and romeo and juliet.
The first couple became a pair of moths/butterflies and the second couple...probably became earthworms? -
There are tons and tons of Lims, Tans, Lees in singapore......even if ur other half is of the same surname as u...it wont be so suay tt u 2 belongs to the same family line bah....

My uncle faced this problem too! But he's happily married right now. Go trace back your roots... If for quite a few generations there's no connection then it should be ok.

This rule is probably just a "law" during Kampung days / Village days were pple in the same village are most prob related by blood thus would have the same surnames...since pple seldom venture out of their village... Being too genetically close would result in a higher chance of producing an abnormal child...But doesn't necessarily mean that all close relatives who marry will definitely produce an abnormal child...
Think the older generation in our modern city would be more concerned about first cousin marriage/marriage between closely related family members rather than marriage between those of the same surname...... -
