Do you think SBST should use flip dot displays as EDS for buses? Right now, LEDs are used and there are problems with them on K230UBs. LEDs EDS of other buses are not so bad and should stay. A flip dot display seems better as they are used on SMRT buses and Siemens C651 trains' run numbers (SMRT trains). They can still be orange. http://singaporeseen.stomp.com.sg/singaporeseen/viewContent.jsp?id=17575

Benefits everybody.
If they continue using Plastic Destos, the buses will look rather boring and it shows that SBS Transit is not following up with technology. Orange coloured filp dot displays will be ideal as they do not need to worry about LED bulbs blowing out.

Yeah saw before several Tridents with the entire EDS full of orange color as well, should be due to the settings and the code entered.
With TIBS/SMRT, the screen must be cleared before new destinations are entered as some dots go haywire when new code is entered in and it tries to adjust to the new destination. Like when switching services, BC 'should' (as in can choose to or not to, not madatory) press '0' first before pressing new code, eg. '505' (s189). For newer Transit Media EDS, the problem still persists with the EDS dots not reacting properly and it takes about a minute for the dots to 'settle'. Buses like 1224Y, 123X, with exception of 1235R and 1236M which uses a slightly different EDS, and 124X with exception of a few, have problems with the EDS. 121X buses seems not to have such a problem.

wear and tear. its norm. even with good maint. for flipdots, alot of SMRT EDS all sot sot 1. 1688 and 2888 always spoil 1. 997 not sure. 9888 spoil till cant recover. flip dots eds removed. the Transit Media on Tridents also encountering some probs. the most cost efficient and comfortable way is plastic destos jus slide it in. do not need to worry if it spoils halfway.

Sorry but i beg to differ...EDS = Following up with technology ?
I do not think so.
In this case, i would feel that bringing the message across is much more important as compared to whether the bus is technology up-to-date.What is the use of having to install an EDS to make the bus look good when the down time is almost 10 - 20% ? Not forgetting that it is not cost effective at all.

Having EDS will make the buses look high tech just like the LEDs in Kawasaki Heavy Industries & Nippon Sharyo C751B cars (SMRT trains).

Flip-dot displays are a bit more tedious to maintain because of the motion parts involved, as compared to LEDs which are purely electronical.
The main limitation with flip-dots is illumination. To illuminate the display at night, you need to project a flourescent tube onto it's surface, which greatly reduces the visible contrast of the display. The other solution would be to use LEDs that light up concurrently wtih the flip-dots for illumination (e.g. Dennis Lance & Hispano Habit), but should that be adopted, then might as well just go for purely LEDs since it would be much cheaper.
I do suppose SBS Transit has intentions to eventually do away with plastic plates. It's not a question of "looking modern" or "catching up with technology", but rather because the plastic plates are bulky and cumbersome for both bus captains and despatchers / depot and interchange staff. This was not done in the earlier years as the cost has yet to come down, but it now has, with parallel technology available from cheaper sources such as *ahem* China.

In the past, BCs who need to crossover to another service at certain times of the day will have to come down to change:
1. Front desto
2. Side plate
3. Back desto
With EDS, the BCs will just need to press a few buttons to change everything.
And risk typing in the wrong code.I've seen a 174 BC who key in Svc 100.
a 189 SL who key in Svc 190 route details.

Different models of the Transit Media EDS I think...

The EDS at the side alternates between "Welcome Aboard" and the destination~ (am slow :()

BC could have forgotten to change EDS at interchanges...Seen many times liao. 853 bus heading to Yishun had EDS displaying Lorong 1 Geylang. 857 bus heading to Yishun displayed NR1 EDS info.
