    • Pretty far fetched, particularly in the "modern SAF".

Even if some trainers or officers behaved as they did, some of the other trainers/ instructors would have intervened or moderated. I had been an instructor once and I have intervened before, when I felt that my trainer colleague was too harsh.

      1) The report was received in 1998, he enlisted in 1996 and the person's IC starts with 75 - which means that he was 21 years old when he enlisted - unusally late don't you think?

      2) 15 days without sleep AND rest?

      3) He said that he was made to do everything with his helmut, rifle, fullpack etc and they weigh 30kgs. How in hell he managed to also carry 6 ali-baba bags and ran for 6 rounds I can't imagine (OK so he said he fell a few times). I am a big sized guy and I wouldn't be able to carry the six bags because of the bulk.

Isn't this site used as a platform for politics? I would not put much store into articles found there as I believe that the majority are slanted towards personal bias and agendas.

Since the so-called report had been submitted so long ago, if indeed it is genuine, there must be some outcome on the investigation. Since there are apparently no follow up articles, I can only conclude that:

      a) The report was not genuine. And the fact that this article is still up there indicates that it is to foment discontent against the established authorities.

      OR

      b) The report is genuine but the investigation had found the content to be fallacious. Therefore, once again for politcal reasons, anything that undermine the impact against the establisment would not be revealed.

In either case, I would not put faith in the report.

    • This event is true.

      That's all I can say.
Such things are very sensitive today.
Anyway, I believe this matter is pretty open considering the letters went to some many people.

NO, 21 enlist is nt late at all. Unless u say 25 enlist. If u study N level n followed by 0 level in sec school that will be 5 yrs liao. N if u go to poly after that it will b another 3 yrs. So by e time u enlist is around 21 yrs old....where gt unusually late?

What's the point? He's already working for the country anyway.

    • Hey hey hey. Come on man- you guys out there are better than this shit! NS will make you guys more man then ever. You will only know the benefits in years to come. trust me.

Besides, have our young man go weak?

I think the SAF and the Government have made a mistake to trial the NSF's death in an open court.

Though fairness is important- but definitely de-moralising for all NSmen, NSF & regular soldiers.

Weaklins- wake up and start being men!!!! Don't tell me you mums give you a canon and 2 marbles for nothing??

Mindef to act against staff who punished soldier

      --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
      Straits Times Feb 4, 1999
      By CHONG CHEE KIN

Mindef investigated after a corporal complained over the Internet that he was ill-treated during his training

      Read the soldier's chilling report

THE Ministry of Defence is taking disciplinary action against some of its instructors after investigating complaints of ill-treatment made over the Internet by a soldier.

Corporal Benjamin Lou, 24, claimed in a posting on the Internet newsgroup soc.culture.singapore that he was ill-treated by instructors during his basic military training (BMT) three years ago.

In the posting, which first appeared on Jan 24, Cpl Lou made numerous detailed allegations. [Singapore Window's source obtained the report in October 1998.]

Among other things, he claimed that he was assaulted, made to do excessive exercise and forced to go without sleep for days on end.

It is understood that before he enlisted, he had signed a six-year contract to serve the Singapore Armed Forces as a commando.

Cpl Lou, who is still with the SAF, said that he complained about the alleged ill-treatment only late last year.

His posting on the Internet newsgroup remained there for several days.

Responding to questions from the Straits Times, a Mindef spokesman said yesterday that it had investigated Cpl Lou's allegations.

"The investigation established that there were instances of unauthorised punishment meted out to him by his instructors," the spokesman said.

But he added: "However, our investigations also showed that some of the allegations, such as the claim that he was deprived of sleep for 15 days, could not be substantiated."

Stressing that Mindef took all such complaints seriously, the spokesman said: "We do not condone the actions of the instructors who meted out the unauthorised punishment as they are clearly against our rules and regulations.

"Appropriate disciplinary actions are being taken."

He also said that the ministry first came to know about Cpl Lou's complaints in November last year and that a thorough investigation had followed.

He added: "The investigations took some time because the alleged incidents happened about three years ago and most of the witnesses had already left the SAF."

You need to make a distinction between accountability and demoralising.Making the CDOs accountable for an act of criminal negligence and intended grevious bodily harm is different from an officer scolding a instructor in front of the latter's recruits.A profesional force will understand what is accountabily and openness.A sub-standard army will not.If we are the latter, then God bless us indeeed.Anyway, your mother gave you a cannon and two marbles but she would expect it to be used , not be burnt early and go up in smoke.Capische?
