20 sent to hospitals after unknown gas leak at Golden Landmark Shopping Centre

SINGAPORE: The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said small quantities of an unknown gas were released at Golden Landmark Shopping Complex at North Bridge Road.

It was notified about the incident at about 4.10pm on Monday.

Channel NewsAsia understands 20 casualties were sent to hospitals like the Singapore General Hospital (SGH) and Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH).

Out of the 20, one was an infant, and another was an SCDF officer.

11 people were taken to SGH and 9 to TTSH.

All are now said to be in stable condition.

They had complained of breathing difficulties.

SCDF added that it has checked the premises and there was no residual gas there.

The affected area is believed to be the first storey of the building.

Tenants were allowed to return to the complex at 5.45pm.

      Investigations are ongoing. — CNA/vm

Gas leak in Singapore mall puts 18 in hospital

SINGAPORE, March 24 - A leak of an unknown gas in a Singapore shopping centre on Monday sent 18 people to hospital complaining of breathing difficulties, a government official said.

The official declined to comment on whether the leak at Golden Landmark Shopping Complex in central Singapore was deliberate or an accident, with investigations still going on.

"Investigations showed a small quantity of unknown gas that was released on the first storey of the building somewhere near the exterior of a staircase," N. Subhas, director of public affairs for the Singapore Civil Defence Force, told Reuters.

"We conducted checks and there are no more traces of the gas found in the building, the situation is under control," he said.

The injured, including an infant, were sent to Singapore General Hospital and Tan Tock Seng Hospital for treatment. The hospitals could not be reached for comment.

Singapore has tightened its security in recent weeks after the escape last month of the alleged Singapore leader of an Islamic militant group from the toilet of a detention centre.

    • how the heck did pepper spray affect 20 ppl in the whole of a building? isn't pepper spray designed to be discharged on a singular assailant?

not to mention the victim was foaming at his mouth and his body was twitching. it sounds like something more potent than juz pepper spray!
