Painting is poetry that is seen rather than felt,
and poetry is painting that is felt rather than seen
-- Leonardo da Vinci
da Vinci is more famous as a painter than a writer, but what the heck, the guy's a genius and should know what he's talking. To me, poetry is like painting, only you do it with words.
For poems are not, as people think, simply emotions
(one has emotions early enough) - they are experiences.
-- Rainer Maria Rilke (1875 - 1926), Czech poet.
I think poetry is about emotions too, but without experiences, one has nothing to write.
A poem is never finished, only abandoned.
-- Paul Valéry ( French poet 1871 - 1945)
How true. When you are sure that it's done, you have doubts and think that it can be improved upon.
You campaign in poetry. You govern in prose.
-- Mario Cuomo, former Governor of New York state.
Have you not fallen asleep looking at your tax forms?

For poetry, hes past his prime,
He takes an hour to find a rhyme;
His fire is out, his wit decayed,
His fancy sunk, his muse a jade.
Id have him throw away his pen,
But theres no talking to some men.
-- Jonathan Swift ( 1667-1745.) Irish poet and satirist
I've written some poetry I don't understand
myself.
-- Carl Sandburg (1878 - 1967), American poet
Same sentiments here.
Writing a poem is discovering
-- Robert Frost (1874 - 1963 ) American poet
Don't you think the man's right?
I'm living so far beyond my income that we may
almost be said to be living apart
-- e. e. cummings (1894 - 1962 ) American poet.
Sounds familiar

Poetry is innocent, not wise. It does not learn from
experience, because each poetic experience is unique.
--- Karl Shapiro (1913 - 2000 ), American poet
The poet has no invention in him until he has been
inspired and is out of his senses.
--- The Philosopher Socrates

Poets are maggots-infested corpses.
Poets like to follow their inspirations. The
difficulty they encounter is in finding the right expressions. One
does well when one can skillfully express new ideas, setting forth
what has never been said by anyone. But to really qualify as the
best, one must be able to portray a scene that is difficult to
describe, to make it come alive, as if it stood immediately before
ones eyes, and moreover, to imply in it meanings infinitely beyond
explicit words.
--- Ouyang Xiu (1007 1072)
In composing poetry it does no harm to create a few
lines from natural inspiration. But dont overdo it lest you become
mired down
Still, if a genuine feeling just flows out, this is of
course much different than someone who seeks some run-of-the-mill
verse.
Zhu Xi
A man may be a born poet, but he has to make himself
an artist as well. He must master the instrument. Without clarified
construction and technical control, no poetical communication can
be effective.
-- Siegfried Sassoon

Poetry is essentially a game, with artificial rules,
and it takes two- a writer and a reader- to play it. If the reader
is reluctant, the game will not work...

The difference between fiction and reality is that
fiction has to make sense.

I see my poetry as a food and I don't want the
reader to analyze the poems, but rather I want them to taste them.
And hopefully they will find them delicious."

I have a poet in my mind ..
who flits away
in case of scorn

as if in song
