New airport security scanner more effective replied by QX179R @ Fri, 18 Jul 2008 21:05:40 +0800

Channel NewsAsia - 2 hours 1 minute
ago

New airport security scanner more effective in
detecting illegal objects

SINGAPORE: Singapore’s Changi Airport Terminal 3 is testing out
a new screening machine which is said to be more effective in
detecting illegal objects concealed on the body. But the new device
could leave travellers a little more exposed.

Called the Millimetre Wave scanner, it is currently on a
three—month trial at Terminal 3 (T3).

The scanner produces images that outline the body contour.
High—frequency radio signals generate millimetre waves which bounce
off the body to reveal any hidden foreign objects.

While some travellers may find the image too revealing, the
Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS) said care has been
taken to protect their privacy.

For example, the passenger’s face and sensitive parts of the
body are blurred. The image, captured at a location away from the
scanner, is deleted after each passenger is processed.

Travellers Channel NewsAsia spoke with did not seem to mind much
about a little exposure.

One traveller said: "I would choose it just because I would
rather someone not pat me down."

"I will go through the scanner as this is a very important thing
for security," said another.

Currently, only one scanner is being used at T3’s A1 to A8 gate
hold room.

If passengers set off a metal detector, they still have the
option of the traditional 'pat—down’ physical search or going
through the new scanner.

CAAS is evaluating whether the US$200,000 scanner improves
passenger flow and is gathering feedback from travellers before
deciding whether to deploy the machines across the airport.

Developed by US—based L3 Communications, Millimetre Wave
scanners are already being used at airports in countries like the
Netherlands, Australia and Indonesia. — CNA/vm

NZ watchdog files charges against airlines replied by QX179R @ Wed, 16 Jul 2008 13:19:36 +0800

Reuters - 1 hour 25 minutes
ago

NZ watchdog files charges against airlines

WELLINGTON, July 16 - New Zealand's competition watchdog has
filed criminal charges against Singapore Airlines <SIAL.SI>,
Cathay Pacific <0293.HK> and Aerolineas Argentinas for not
providing information sought as part of its investigation into
alleged price-fixing, it said on Wednesday.

The Commerce Commission said it was investigating allegations
that some airlines had colluded and reached agreements on cargo
rates, including international fuel surcharges, on flights to and
from New Zealand.

It said it had ordered the three airlines to provide information
for its investigation by a specific date in November, but they had
not complied.

"Any failure to comply with commission statutory notices that
form part of a commission investigation is a serious enforcement
issue," Commission Chair Paula Rebstock said in a statement.

Charges had been filed with the District Court and the firms
could be fined up to NZ$30,000 each if found guilty.

Rebstock said if its broader investigation concluded that there
was a case for price-fixing, it would file proceedings with the
High Court.

"Cartels are insidious and cause extensive damage to the New
Zealand economy," she said.

Air cargo services to and from New Zealand are worth more than
NZ$400 million a year.

Regulators in the United States, the European Union and
Australia have been pursuing airlines over alleged air cargo price
fixing.

Last month Air France-KLM <AIRF.PA> and three other
airlines agreed to pay fines totalling $504 million to settle a
case brought by U.S. anti-trust officials.

Last year, British Airways Plc <BAY.L> and Korean Air
Lines <003490.KS> pleaded guilty and agreed to each pay a
$300 million criminal fine for conspiring to fix cargo rates for
international air shipments and to fix passenger fuel surcharges or
fares for some routes.

On Jan. 14, 2008, Australia's Qantas Airways <QAN.AX>
agreed to pay a $61 million criminal fine for cargo price-fixing.
And last month, Japan Airlines <9205.T> was sentenced to pay
a $110 million criminal fine for similar price-fixing.

SIA renews push for US Australia route replied by QX179R @ Mon, 07 Jul 2008 11:47:49 +0800

SIA renews push for US Australia
route

Singapore Airlines has renewed its push for foreign carriers to
be allowed to fly the lucrative transpacific route between US and
Australia.

In a submission to the center-left Labor government's National
Aviation Policy Green Paper, SIA said it believes the international
air services policies of past governments have "not adequately
balanced competing interests.

And it said, this has come at a cost to the tourism industry
through missed opportunities to capitalize on growth.

SIA singled out the so-called transpacific route between
Australia and the US for particular criticism.
It said that Australia's regulatory approach "maintains protection
for Australian carriers, which is counter to its position of
supporting open and free trade elsewhere.

The route is currently dominated by national carrier Qantas
Airways and UAL Corp's United Airlines, due to a policy of only
allowing Australian and US carriers to fly the route.

SIA said there's simply not enough competition on the
transpacific route.

With only Qantas and United Airlines servicing the route, the
Singapore carrier said fares are very high and uncompetitive as a
result.

SIA also said protecting Qantas' interests is "serving only the
interests of Qantas, not Australia's national interest, which
depends on tourism growth.

It added that it's a "long-term player in the Australian market"
and has a "keen interest" in developing a strong relationship with
the new Australian government.

Australia's Victoria state government, in a separate submission,
also called on the federal government to grant SIA and other "third
country" airlines access to the Australia to US route. -

SIA takes delivery of fifth A380 replied by QX179R @ Sat, 28 Jun 2008 22:13:31 +0800

Reuters - 1 hour 53 minutes
ago

Singapore Airlines takes delivery of fifth A380

SINGAPORE, June 28 - Singapore Airlines <SIAL.SI>, the
world's most valuable airline by stock market value, said it had
received its fifth Airbus A380 superjumbo on Saturday.

The A380, the world's biggest passenger plane, will arrive in
Singapore on June 29, and will ply the carrier's Singapore-London
route except for the first week in August, when it will fly to
Beijing to meet higher passenger traffic during the Olympics,
Singapore Airlines said in a statement.

The delivery of the superjumbo comes after its maker Airbus
<EAD.PA> announced in May another delay in deliveries.

The planemaker has struggled to boost production as quickly as
it hoped, risking further penalty payments to airlines.

Airbus is trying to recover from two years of production delays
caused by problems in installing wiring on the mammoth doubledecker
planes.

Shares in Airbus parent EADS <EAD.PA> have dropped 44
percent this year while rival Boeing <BA> is down 22
percent.

Singapore Airlines said it has firm orders for another 14 A380s
and options to buy six more.

Singapore Airlines to raise fuel surcharges replied by QX179R @ Wed, 18 Jun 2008 22:42:11 +0800

Reuters - Thursday, June
19

Singapore Airlines to raise fuel surcharge again

SINGAPORE, June 18 - Singapore Airlines <SIAL.SI>, the
world's second-biggest airline by market value, said on Wednesday
that it will raise fuel surcharges for tickets issued from June 24
due to the sustained increase in jet fuel prices.

The total surcharge now ranges from $180 for flights between
Singapore and the United States, to $40 for flights from the
city-state to other Southeast Asian countries, the carrier said in
a statement.

This is the third time this year the company has raised fuel
surcharges, as jet fuel prices <JET-SIN> have surged 49
percent so far in 2008. (Reporting by Daryl Loo, editing by Neil

Reuters - 45 minutes ago

Emirates to take delivery of first A380 in July

DUBAI, June 5, - State-owned Emirates airline said on Thursday
it expected to take delivery of its first Airbus A380 double-decker
aircraft by July 28.

Emirates [EMAIR.UL], the largest A380 customer, with 58 orders
worth $18.8 billion, expects to receive five of the world's biggest
airliner by the end of March 2009, it said in a statement.

The airline will use its first A380 on routes from Dubai to New
York, London Heathrow and Sydney-Auckland, it said.

Singapore became the first airline to operate the A380 when it
entered service last October following an 18-month delay due to
production problems. It has since received four.

Airbus said in May it would deliver a total of 12 A380s instead
of 13 this year and 21 instead of 25 in 2009.

The ability to stick to this schedule is a key factor driving
the shares of parent EADS .

787 delay hurts expansion plan replied by QX179R @ Thu, 22 May 2008 18:58:32 +0800

Reuters - 2 hours 3 minutes
ago

Japan Airlines says 787 delay hurts expansion
plan

SINGAPORE, May 22 - Japan Airlines , Asia's biggest airline by
revenue, said on Thursday the delay in delivery of Boeing's 787
aircraft was hurting its expansion plans but it was not looking to
go for an alternative plane.

The comments were made in Singapore by JAL President and Chief
Executive Haruka Nishimatsu, who earlier told Reuters the carrier
could not absorb the rising cost of fuel and needed to raise fuel
surcharges.

Changi Airport’s Terminal 2 tops new safety award replied by QX179R @ Tue, 20 May 2008 20:18:07 +0800

Channel NewsAsia - 54 minutes
ago

Changi Airport’s Terminal 2 tops new safety award

SINGAPORE: Changi Airport’s Terminal 2 has topped a new award
for building safety which was given out by the Building and
Construction Authority (BCA) on Tuesday.

BCA said upgrading works at Terminal 2 (T2) beat 12 other
nominated projects for the BCA Design and Engineering Safety
Excellence Awards.

The T2 project was chosen because it took many measures to
ensure safety while it continues its round the clock
operations.

These include several innovative solutions such as using steel
structures which were fabricated offsite and erected at the airport
premises. This minimises interference to day—to—day activities.

Engineers also used a combination of movable working platforms
and cranes to keep construction away from airport users.

To minimise noise, dust and debris, the engineers also used
methods such as carbon fibre—wrapping and bracings.

So for overcoming constraints such as limited working spaces
while maintaining Changi Airport’s image as one of the world’s
best, the project clinched the building safety award.

Other merit winners under the Building category are Central (the
commercial development built over the existing Clarke Quay MRT
Station), LaSalle College of the Arts, One Raffles Quay and ITE
College East.

Under the Civil Engineering category, the merit award went to
Fort Canning Tunnel and Bishan SMRT Depot Underpinning Works. —

deliveries

SINGAPORE, May 13 - Singapore Airlines said on Tuesday that it
expects to receive its fifth A380 superjumbo by early July and sees
some impact on subsequent deliveries after Airbus announced further
delays.

"The changes in production schedules will potentially have some
impact, the details of which we will need to understand from
Airbus," Singapore Air spokesman Stephen Forshaw said in an
email.

Singapore Air has ordered a 19 of the A380 with options for six

Airport SG-BT VS China replied by BangHong @ Sun, 04 May 2008 11:34:27 +0800

Well, this is something i want to talk about. I just came back
from China-Beijing, they security there is tight, and they check
things through. It maybe part of the olympics.

When i first landed back in singapore-BT, i realized the
security is very loose, i actually able to brought 5packets of
cigarette !! I think its ridiculous, they did
not scan all of the bags when passenger is leaving. I still
remember last year when i came back from china, that was in T1 or
T2, the security is tighter.

Really BT is very BUDGET!
