I will definitely try my best to impart all my knowledge and experience to my understudy because I myself was once in the unpleasant experience of needing to figure out almost everything myself when my upper-study did a half-@ssed job in teaching me the ropes.
As for my understudy, I even went to the extent of providing him a "help desk support" whereby I gave him the assurance that whenever he needed me, I'll be a phone-call away, provided he does not abuse it. And during the last few days of my leaves, I went back to my office to check in on how he is doing and what his progress was like.

Ya... indeed is interesting...
Assuming those newcomers have a good learning attitude :
I think many will conserve their skills in order to have an advantage over somebody... It is very common... I have seen it everywhere...
But for me, I will teach whatever I noe to those newcomers... y ??? Coz, I am the type that when people noe my 100% , I will increase my skill lvl to 110%...

exactly.

some people might feel that by not teaching everything he/she knows and keeping some skills to himself, he cannot be easily replaced by younger newer staffs.
but qiqi, 50% is like too little. at least 80% lah. cos u still need him/her to share your workload. if not hire him for what?

hmm ... wrong attitude... I would teach my understudy all of my skill and if possible transfer my responsibilities to my understudy.. When there is someone ready to take over you, only then you are ready to move foreward.. like a promotion or something like that. Say if there is an opening for a promotion for you but there is no one to take over your current job, then how to move you upwards ? Company is not going to promote you to do same job right... If you have to hold on to old job while performing new responsibilties .. can you handle ? so think of the future .. of course it depend on the organisation also... I had benefitted from this, that why I pen it here ...

That concept is quite yester-year isn't it, fearing of retrenchment after imparting your skills.
Anyway, if the company expects to bump me off after I fully impart my skills and knowledge to the newcomer, then that company isn't worth my time and effort to work in anymore.
And the newcomer isn't blind: If he sees his senior gets fired after imparting of knowledge, surely he will feel that he would be victimized sooner or later by that management policy? And what kind of message would the management team be sending to the rest of the employees should they even do such a thing?

Anyway, if the company decided to "dump you off ", with or without anyone understudying you, they will do it. Afterall, " money will make the world go round ", they can always pay higher to get someone to do the job .. I got this experiences.. my supervisor is one who keep everything to himself, he rather work very late than asking us for help. Seriously no one know his work. He was very safe but remain in that position for many years. Then one day, he was asked to leave with 24 hours. None of us can take over his work. No one really know.. The company paid a very experience manager to take over and within 3 months, a new job procedure was created. Then one of us was promoted to take over his place. See, no one is indepensable.
For me, if I teach and produce a good disciple, I will be praised if he done well. If he screw it up, they will ask, " how you teach one ". so what you want to hear depend on how you much you want to teach your understudy .. my two cents worth ..

teach all you can. when there's someone who can take over your job the co will be more willing to promote you.

i got a new colleague attached to me now
She is older and more experienced than me. So, i get a bit awkward when i ask her to do things.
She has to learn everything i am doing now and take over my current a/c so that i can move on to a new a/c..
But she don't seem to be quite eager and anxious to learn. Give her something to do, she can spend whole day doing but my current a/c don't allow me to have the luxury to do so slow.
My senior didn't teach me 100% of what he noe. In fact, most of the things is i ownself make error or ask than i know.
I guess people are selfish bah.
