OK, tell you now, on Saturday and Sunday, 17 & 18 May, there
will be a Budda's Day fair in Federation Square. I first
attended the fair in 2006 and there were lots of stalls there
selling Asian snacks. You might even get laksa that day, if
lucky. Think they have the Vietnamese version of the chai tow
kway as well. There's also some sorta concert and
performances on a makeshift stage.

Go there, mingle with the crowd, sit on the patch of grass and
have a picnic.

Or walk towards the back, sit on a bench, eat your snacks, and
look out at Yarra River. Usually you'll be able to catch
people rowing their boats. Good photo opportunities!

I'm going to be sponsored for a Deakin Post-Grad Diploma course
by my employer. They will be footing 75% of the course
fees. However, I've found out that my income will drop by
40-50% for the duration of the course, therefore, it's best to save
up a tidy sum first before embarking on it, as I see most of the
current batch of students struggling not only with the intensity,
challenges and difficulties of the course, they are also struggling
financially and leading a hand-to-mouth existence, with a few
running on deficit! <img src=

Dear rhonda, The above post i gave was to the new guy in
melbourne, he may be a student

U must be buying raw meat , poultry and fish all the time which will of cos cost u more..And
are u also cooking for yr family?

I can live on $50 - $60 per month as it is only for myself....my
gf is in sydney currently due to work commitments...cos there is
such cheap things as Canned food which are as good in nutritional
value as the raw ones...

u can make great dishes with rice, potatoes, eggs, vegetables and canned meat if u are clever.

i always drive to city rather than take the train....but i keep my car for weekend travel to shops and city than drive everyday....I just need to buy 5 day per week metlink card and take public transport during weekdays ...

with rising petrol prices, u should be clever and balance yr
stuff well.

You are very frugal! Unfortunately, I love to eat well and
I love variety in my meals so it's hard to save that way. I'm
not a vegetarian, nor am I a huge fan of canned food, so I do buy
fresh meat, poultry and seafood when I cook. Occasionally, I
do resort to canned or frozen TV dinners, but I'd much prefer
freshly-cooked food, or takeaways.

I'm on the same page with elindra with regards to canned meat
products - they are all processed to hell. When I do eat canned food, I usually add
fresh vegetables to it, but honestly, they may taste better, but it
doesn't mean they are more nutritious nor more palatable.

Maybe it boils down to one thing - whether you eat to live, or
live to eat. Being a Mod of Club 30, needless to say, I live
to eat! <img src="/images/emoticons/classic/icon_mrgreen.gif"

So much for the debate on canned stuffs and cheap groceries.
Looks like one can survive on very

Melbournite - Ta-bao food from home in lunch boxes
is a great way to save money too! You won't have to spend a

I am staying in one of the houses along bloom street. The
student hostels in 1A Bloom Street is pretty neat. So much better
as compared to mine. lolx.

So much for the debate on canned stuffs and cheap groceries.
Looks like one can survive on very little in Melbourne; just that
you must compromise on certain things.

one-niner - thanks for the advice as i be heading down to
Springvale and prolly Smith Street this weekend! oh i havent seen
any druggies yet..haha..i have only visited the beach and its
within walking distance from Frankston Station! =D

Melbournite - Ta-bao food from home in lunch boxes
is a great way to save money too! You won't have to spend a
single cent for the overpriced meals around Melbourne. Just cook
double the normal portion from the pervious night's dinner and pack
it into lunchboxes. Microwave it and its ready to go!

Finally i got myself in Melbourne...I am staying in the suburbs
- Frankston. I went for a show last night called 'Busting-Out'. It
is woahhhh..anyone caught that show before and staying around the
area.???

Hey man, I studied in the Peninsula Campus at Monash ! used to
stay at the student hostel along 1A Bloom Street ! U staying in the
student hostel or the houses along Bloom ?

Anyway try to becareful around in Frankston. During my studies
there, I have seen drug addicts getting high in toliets and walking
ard with needles sticking out of their arms.

Other than that, your heading into winter and i doubt you will
be hitting the beach.. Do spend time go travel up to Mornington
Peninsula to pluck straw berries and visit the jam factory.

As for shopping here, I think the bear and most of the folks
have mentioned the whole works. However spend time at Chapel &
Richmond if you want to buy fashion stuff or Smith Street for the
gd old Nike & Addidas Warehouse stores !

As for food, go to Springvale and try the Pho there. It's heaven
as compared to the thinly flavoured versions found in
singapore.

I did post that I was asking about meat (as in meat meat and not
fish meat) coz usually ppl call fish flesh. fish and not
meat

When you said canned meat was nutritious I was thinking in the
lines of corned beef, luncheon meat, canned sausages
etc

Anyway I'm not in Oz just wanted to clarify your canned meat is
just as nutritious line

firstly in Aus, u dont sweat due to weather, unlike in SG u face
humid weather, stress , pollution which will deprive your body of
nurients and due to sweating

In Aus u dont really feel hungry often due to not sweating but
u still need to eat on time... but the key is the type of food u
eat..

if your diet has bread, rice and meat, vegetables...then its a good diet.
