Singapore set for 2008 night race - report
Posted 03 March 2007 at 14:13 GMT
Hot on the heels of South Africa's re-emergence on the Formula One radar, it is being reported that Singapore is set to join the annual calendar as early as 2008.
The newspaper Today quoted a 'source' who confirmed that the project, with government support, could be given the green light next week for an April or August date.
F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone is expected to travel to the island city-state, located in south east Asia, later this month.
"I can confirm that Singapore is on the calendar next year and it could either be the third race of the season, or towards the end of the season in August," the anonymous source said, explaining that he is bound by non-disclosure rules.
'Today' claims that the Singapore grand prix will be F1's first ever night race, on a city circuit.

If it goes through, all else being equal and with Abu Dhabi on the calendar, we'll have 19 races again next season.
I wonder what's going to hold the teams and Formula One Management together since the current Concorde Agreement expires this year. FOM had to pay the teams a bigger share whenever the calendar has more than 17 races.

Not just that. I don't want to see any poofs' complaint letters appearing on the Forum pages about the massive road closures, high ticket prices and deafening noise.

I am quite sure this event will not be able to pull thru, if the gov wants to cover all security areas.
There are so many hassle involved in a night street circuit.
Imagine that people who pays for the Chingay are already not happy when freeloaders squeeze into the gallery seats area. What will happen at F1?
There is no way that the entire perimeter of the streets can be closed off.
There will be many areas to view the cars zooming pass for free.
Without sufficient tickets sale....how to recover some money?
Unless the rich sponsor Mr. OBS is willing to absorbed all the cost with his private monies!

I.e 2nd circle of roads. Or simply place high barricades.
Put it this way, the benefits outweigh the cost.

This is a cool idea (both literally and figuratively speaking). Watching a live race under the noon sun is certainly a turn-off.
Assuming the race commences during the evening at about 6, you have a mixture of day and night racing when the chequered flag is raised about 1.5 hours later. From the viewpoint of Singapore, this will be an excellant way to deck out its skyline both in its day and night attire. I do like the idea of fireworks to conclude race proceedings.
I do feel that street racing is the way to go considering the limited land resources. However that also means that it is going to be very difficult for Singapore to develop its local racers to compete in the future without its own circuit.
