Two years after test drive that left salesgirl passenger dead

AFTER a protracted investigation that took almost two years, the youth blamed for causing the death of a car salesgirl was finally charged in court yesterday with reckless driving.
Regan Lee Da Wen, 26, was accused of causing the death of Ms He Xueli, 22, by driving a Mazda MX-5 convertible dangerously during a test drive in October 2005.
Minutes after taking the wheel, Lee lost control of the $110,000 silver sports car along Upper Paya Lebar Road. The vehicle flew over the road divider and crashed head-on with a BMW before flipping over and smashing into a van in another lane.
Lee, a warehouse supervisor, reportedly drives a Fiat Punto HGT — a high-performance car that was a gift from his father — and had no intention of buying the Mazda.
He escaped unhurt in the accident but Ms He — the only child of an odd-job labourer and a bakery assistant — died in hospital.
Lee, who was Ms He's last customer for the day, was later arrested but released on $10,000 bail.
The five BMW passengers were taken to hospital with breathing difficulties and chest pains, while the van's occupants, a couple, escaped unscathed.
Lee, who will appear in court on June 18 for a pre-trial conference, faces a maximum five-year jail term if found guilty. Yesterday, his lawyer Julian Tay said his client was "haunted" by the accident.
Earlier this month, the youth incurred the rage of Netizens and car enthusiasts after he wrote in a motoring forum that he was shopping for sports cars and could not decide between a Subaru WRX and a Volkswagen Golf GTI. Many were angry that he was allowed to drive while investigations were ongoing.
Yesterday, Lee's indictment sparked a host of comments on several Internet forums.
"He is boasting about which sports car to buy ... Does he look like he has been 'haunted'?" asked Flyer_king, in a sammyboy.com post.
Aside from the criminal charge, Lee also faces civil proceedings brought against him by other parties in the accident. According to lawyer Daniel Goh, who is acting for the driver of the BMW, his client is suing Lee for damage caused to the former's car as well as injuries suffered by those in it.

Two men accused of driving dangerously, in separate incidents, have their cases heard
SINGAPORE: The man accused of injuring six women, when his car hurtled across Penang Road and ploughed into a bus stop on May 1, had his case adjourned yet again.
Lawyers representing Simon Wong Heng Chiang said the prosecution has asked the court for a postponement as they are still waiting for the release of the victims' medical reports.
Wong faces multiple charges of drink driving, driving dangerously and causing hurt through a negligent act.
He is out on S$10,000 bail and his passport has been impounded.
The case will be mentioned in court on July 2.
In a separate case, 26 year old Regan Lee Da Wen was on Monday charged with causing the death of his female passenger by driving dangerously.
The court heard that in October 2005, Lee lost control of a Mazda MX-5 during a test drive along Paya Lebar Road.
The car mounted a centre island, and crashed into another car, before flipping over and hitting a van.
22-year-old car salesperson Angelia He Xueli, who was in the sports car, later died in hospital.
Lee, who is out on S$10,000 bail, had his driving license suspended by the District Court in April.
His case on Monday was adjourned until 31 July, after his lawyers requested for more time to make representations to the Attorney General's Chambers.
Besides the criminal case, Lee could also face two civil suits, including one filed by Ms He's parents. - CNA/yy

That's why they're speeding in the first place. Yeah, no amount of blame pushing will do anything, but it can spur those who ARE making the decisions to react faster.
The new question is that how will his punishment match his deeds? Is there a standard guide for crime punishment? Take a life = 50yrs in jail? Who and how can punishment be determine? Is it fair? Who will determine if its bias? How much does someones life worth? Who determines the values? Doubt you can answer that.
And at lease i'm trying to be nice, YOU on the other hand, try to snub people with your witty comment when people are discussing their THOUGHTS & OPINIONS, and i dont care what u think of it.
