The road is a curve road, and there is a shopping centre near there.. I did not want to speed just in case .. when I driving out he started to drive too. Sorry I forgot to add, there a motor bike behind me and I don't want to swerve back.. that why I tap the horn . .. I think I am being careful and I want to be careful.. that's why we come head to head.. my point is this ... when you pick up your fare, before you drive off, don't you check before driving off ... since you had stopped and inconvenient some one, won't you just wait for the car to pass by before driving off ...Originally posted by Pitot:wad speed are u overtaking at?

I do pick my friend and I make sure I give way to people before driving off ... it's my way of saying thank you ... I don't expect the taxi driver to thank me but he must has the basic courtesy, still want to show sign ... pointing here and there !!!
Ya.. you are right ... When I was approaching the taxi, his door is open, I guess I did have enough time to overtake, it's seem that that was not to be as the passenger was already in the car and was closing the door .. I err in my judgement this time round ... I had been driving for more than 10 years and had been very careful in such situation, but I don't really expect the idiot to just drive off without due consideration ...Originally posted by ellisbeck:Well, I am a new driver, so I hope you wouldn't mind me sharing.
I agree with you being careful and needing to give way to people before driving off - that's very considerate of you.
However, at the point of happening, people only have time to react at times and may forget certain things. For this instance, the taxi driver may be in the wrong, but just bear this in mind and think about how you can do better in a similar situation in future?
Because I am a new driver, I think I will get quite nervous if I were to be in the same situation as you were in. I would usually stop behind the taxi when I can - I know it can be rather cowardly to do that, but knowing how some taxi drivers just need to "chiong", I would rather be safe than sorry. However, I also have the impression that you didn't expect him to move off just as you overtake - so that's quite a tricky situation to be in.
I thought overtaking is not allowed on a curve road?Originally posted by ORIGAMIST:The road is a curve road, and there is a shopping centre near there.. And not be insisting on wanting to overtake in front.

agree...Originally posted by w2k_83:if both of you are head-to-head, and there isn't much space ahead to overtake safely, juz slow down and go behind the cab lo... I don't see what's the fuss that you have to tap horn for the cab driver to let you overtake... As he moved off, he won't be able tell that you were trying to overtake him since you wasn't in front of him. All he can see is that you are another car on the next lane.
Less than 50m and the cab having juz moved off from stationary, you are still neck-to-neck with him? That's far too slow of you right. By right if you are already moving and you cut out while the cab juz started moving, you would have more than ample clearance to overtake him.
Nich, dun sterotype la, it's just ppl dun notice taxis that are road polite. People only kpkb when taxi cut into their lane, sighOriginally posted by nicholademus:of course not all taxi drivers do that.... there'll always be irresponsible drivers around...cant avoid...

I am not insisting to overtake .. I tap my horn to sound to him I was next to him and is overtaking ... if situation is bad, well surely I would let him go .. there is no point getting hurt .. what I am trying to say is, I tap the horn as a signal .. I wasn't blasting the horn or what .. he should in the first place give way as he had first inconveinent someone ... then why stare and start gestering here and there ... I mean is this right in the first place ... some say I road hog, yes indeed I seldom speed as I do not see the need to ... Singapore is a small country, how fast can you go ?Originally posted by w2k_83:Noone's expecting you to speed or swerve back. As a vehicle that just moved off, how would he know that a vehicle on the next lane is trying to overtake? Does that mean that if you see a chain on vehicles on the next lane you should never move off even though your lane is clear? It is the responsibility of the overtaking vehicle to check if there's sufficient clearance.
Yes the cab driver could have done better to allow you to overtake first, but you have also erred in believing that you must overtake the cab. What's wrong with waiting behind the stationary lorry until it is clear to shift back to your previous lane? Your action has endangered your car, the cab as well as the lorry.
