I wouldn't go for second hand cars... Anyway $100K can probably get you only a 2004 520i (4 years old).
Mark X is also nearing the end of its model run... This Mark X model has been 4 years old already (introduced in 2004). Buy now and there's a high chance that there'll be a new Mark model coming out next year.

I'll continue looking around as i stated above I'm in no rush =) Will take a look at the new models of the Mazda 6 and ford. Might wait to see the new markX however with the current model already hitting 100k not sure if the new one will exceed my budget. The recent plunge in COE is quite tempting though...

Yah shop around. 100K budget - many options available.
I thought for reliability should go for Japanese brands, esp. Toyota.
Personally I would choose between the Accord and Camry. In the USA, the Camry was the 2007 car of the year. The new Accord has also won many many accolades.

Reliability-wise, can't compete with top Japanese makes.
I heard Volvo also break down a lot.
Mercedes quality also has been dropping. That's the reason why our dear MM LKY switched to a Lexus. He has publicly said that previously he used to drive Mercs but the cars started to spend a lot of time in the workshop.
Somebody wrote that the MarkX is build on the Lexus GS300 platform right?
I'm pretty sure the Camry is built on the Lexus IS250 platform.

It is in Toyota's business strategy to first develop platforms for the Lexus model before pushing them down to the Toyota line. Through this strategy they reap huge economies of scale.
That's the info I get from talking to Toyota people, not just here but in the USA.
The Camry model in Singapore is slightly different from the one in the USA though.
I'm mistaken about the Camry on the IS250 platform. It should be the ES series platform, which I understand is not sold by Borneo in Singapore for the simple reason that it looks just like the Camry.

Common knowledge in the US that Lexus and Toyota share platforms. But that's the same for many other auto manufacturers. Problem with Lexus ES and Toyota Camry is that the two cars look almost identical.
