    • Seeking advice for those who use semi manual function.

Just wondering how to utitlise sports mode function on auto cars. Handbook didn't specify anything.

      There's a + and - sign next to N, P, R and D mode.

If I start on 1st gear as per normal and shift to the second and third etc, does the gas pedal act as a clutch?

How to shift down? By using brake pedal as clutch too?

    • Just up/down your gear as per normal, minus the clutch pedal. There's no need to worry about the clutch.

    • Just keep accelerator depressed. There's no need to release it when you nudge the "+" or "-".

That's what I was thinking. Unless it's a high performance sports car, how can the 3rd gear go to 200km/h? icon_lol.gif

      Unless it's 200m/s he's talking about. icon_lol.gif

cool, what about shifting down? same thing? no need to reduce speed first?

    • yup reduce speed first... it would prob spoil the gearbox if you don't slow down first but i haven tried without slowing down..

No need say reduce speed first then downshift. Just release accelerator then can downshift already. If the gearbox is good enough, it might even blip the throttle for you.

    • And actually the whole purpose of manual override is to provide more engine braking, that's all.

It doesn't help much with acceleration, unless you go study the power graph of your engine and determine where's the best point to upshift.

For most auto gearbox with manual override function, it will automatically upshift at redline. But for some marques, they prefer to make it more manual-like so it holds on to the gear even if it's at the redline. BMW's auto gearbox with manual function is one example. It will not shift up unless you ask it to.

So the main purpose is to let you nudge "-" to downshift and achieve greater engine braking. So it's made to downshift, don't be afraid to do it. It most probably won't damage the gearbox because its processor will know what to do to achieve downshift.

Don't think i'll get serious enough to study charts and graphs.

Try it once and see what happens.

      Thanks mate!

    • And of course, there's paddle shifts which is found in most European cars and is now increasingly common on Japanese's too.(i.e new Mazda 6 and Lancer EX GT).

So u dont have to upshift at the gearstick but instead toggle at the steering wheel paddle shifters to have a F1 feelicon_lol.gif
