Well, the cars that I have driven and used the + and - (if I recall correctly), got Mazda 3, Mitsubishi Colt Plus, Mitsubishi Galant and Lexus IS250
So for these cars, you don't have to release the accelerator, but as you can see I only have the chance to drive Jap cars, if yours is a special or conti car then I won't know liao, sorry!

He just presses the Sport button.
He doesn't drive that fast though..

He just presses the Sport button.. Or S.. Depending on which car.
Some of the cars don't have 'sport' mode.. Like some Alphard MPV.
He doesn't drive that fast though.. Rare hard acceleration, when we're using a more sporty car.. Etc..
Sports Mode(not Tiptronic) merely makes the acceleration more aggresive, like upshifting at redline and/or making the gear shift faster at the expense of fuel consumption and comfort. At the heart of the ECU its still in full-automatic mode unless you activate the Tiptronic function if applicable.

Eh... Maserati QP isn't auto..
I bet it doesn't have Tiptronic function or whatever too..
Haha

I think it uses the same gearbox system as Ferraris - The sequential gearbox. It uses some software in the ECU to change gear I think. Somewhat the same as Triptroic. Just different names I guess.

Okay. To make this clear, Quattroporte first started selling with only an automated manual gearbox and a manual gearbox. I think Maserati calls their automated manual gearboxes Cambiacorsa (maybe wrong spelling?). Automated manual gearboxes as in they are actually manual gearboxes with clutch, but there is no clutch pedal. Because eletronics will take care of the clutch for you and thus it can shift automatically but it's essentially a manual.
Thereafter, Maserati decided to fit the QPs with ZF 6-speed torque convertor automatic gearboxes to make it more relaxing and comfortable to drive. So now the QP is available with 3 different gearboxes if I'm not wrong. Correct me if I'm wrong.
Edit: Typo

Oh.. I see..
What's 'DuoSelect' about then? don't really get it..
Is it like both manual and auto or semi auto maybe?

Thats Maserati's terms for a sequential manual gearbox,as Alle had explained to you about
Oo.. Ok. Thanks.
not to forget, Sports mode also changes the settings for suspension. These settings usually come together with increased traction and firmer handling, if i'm not wrong.
I seldom see saloon cars with the additional Sports mode. My stand is that you either make cars specific towards comfort and drivability and cost-effectiveness or specific towards max performance. Like normal Lancer vs Lancer Evo etc.
Please feel free to correct me, my knowledge quite limited.

Yea Sports Mode for transmission is kinda rare, maybe manufactorers prefer to opt for Tiptronic...
