Hey,
Studying up for my advanced theory but I'm not too sure how to go about stopping, say you're like 15metres away from the traffic light what do you do?
Engine brake?(How does this work), change-down? or just step on the brake?
Help is appreciated
Engine break(down gear) + normal breaking.
E Brake !!!!
use intermitted braking, then remember to step on crutch pedal
Don't understand how to do an engine break though, passed my basic but advanced was only 3 days away from basic so I haven't booked any lessons..
u will learn all these in practical la..
anyway.. u dont have to do intermitent braking because it is uncomfortable and ure not going at a high speed.
upon approaching the traffic light, gently depress the brake pedal, clutch in and switch from gear 4 to gear 3.. den to gear 2.. and once u come to a complete stop, shift it into neutral, adjust ur leg again to be comfortable and shift in to gear 1, ready for acceleration again.. oh ya, remember to pull handbrake when u fully come to a halt..

have u started driving yet?

For auto cars, if neutral gear is engaged before the car stops completely, would it cause stress on the 'rod' that the transmission is turning , resulting in fracture (in the long run) of this rod?
How true do you experts think this rumour is?

no need intermitten breaking... nowadays most cars equipped with ABS....
and its dangerous to disengage the clutch and let it free wheel unless until the car is very slow....

which 'rod' are u talking about??
crank shaft?? prop shaft ( in rwd cars)??? wheel axle?? differential?? connecting rods in the engine??

should be clutch in.. engage from 4 to 3... clutch out ... and then clutch in engage from 3 to 2.. then clutch out... if not clutch in all the way no point.. LOL

Ya that's what I thought.

I passed my BTT already, taking my FTT tomorrow and making my PDL too(couldn't make on the day I passed my BTT because I didn't have glasses)
Having booked my driving lessons like I said above because my BTT and FTT was only 3 days apart so I figured I'd take both first and since my PDL isn't made I might as well make it tomorrow and then book my lessons.
Wouldn't it take damn long to change down? 4 - 3 - 2 - 1? I see taxi drivers just intermittent brake then from gear 4, depress clutch, switch to gear 1.
What's an engine break?! Advanced theory book says it's the best way to break so it doesn't wear off your break lining too.
Though my sister says that you don't/hardly use it/not tested. But good if I know.
I'll use engine brake + braking
dun forget to clutch in just bef e engine goes dead
unless it's a dist away and you know traffic light is red, I'll go kosong and control on braking liao... or too near but not able to clear junction in time, just brake le

Hey, do you mind explaining in technical terms what you mean? I kinda don't understand in layman terms(how strange). What's kosong? and control on braking? By using brake pedal?
Firstly, can anyone explain how to perform an engine brake?

kosong = zero... meaning goes neutral... for tis just concentrate on braking to a halt safely. only applicable if it's a long distance away and traffic light is red
yeah la, brake pedal then?
engine brake is to reduce your gear i.e. from 4th to 3rd, 3rd to 2nd gear... control your speed and apply your clutch to reduce gear and slowly release clutch to have e engine brake effect
engine brake = letting the engine brake by itself, literally.
engine brake automatically kicks in when you dont depress the accelerator.
say you're on 4th gear. slightly depress the brake pedal (to prevent free wheeling) then change down to 3rd gear. Once you're on 3rd gear, change down to 2nd gear then release your foot from the brake pedal. On 2nd gear is where the engine brake works its best. Just let the vehicle cut off its speed slowly. When approaching to a stop, clutch in and brake.
if those do take e new SBS single decks, can feel how strong is e engine brake... lol
btw, it's 6 gear automatic gearbox

Thumbs up, that explains everything I am curious about.
OKAY, test is tomorrow, wish me luck,
anyone has any tips; like what I should pay particular attention about/difficult questions?
Thanks for all the help guys.

but thing is tis.. going kosong is after you get your license.... dun ever do this kind of thing bef getting your license

great post. thanks. understood further and how to apply it.

wah lan, almost made me think it's a advanced method, thanks. lol.
i was like you before i learnt to drive too, started forming theories inside my head of different "how to". coz i was thinking that i better familiarize and prepare myself before the actual lessons.
turns out that after i started my lessons, those silly theories that i formed are useless. just go for the lessons and you'll natually understand everything. ![]()

Alright, just that my brain doesn't really work on memory when it comes to these things, I remember better by understanding each function and by relating them by how they compliment each other. Thus one reminds me of the other and vice. versa.

i think the theory you posted here is entirely wrong..
