Cant answer this question. Those with carbon fiber casing will be alot sturdier. Magnesium Alloy one will be slightly stronger than plastic and cools the laptop faster.
[quote]And, which notebook gives me the best value for its price tag?IMO, Acer. Asus also good but you pay slightly more for the brand. The choice of notebook and the perceived value is all up to people.

i am using my third laptop
1st was a thinkpad (still around)
2nd was a asus (die until cannot be revived, threw away in Australia liao)
3rd is a T41 ThinkPad
if i had to buy a new laptop, i will still stick with ibm thinkpads
they are slightly more expensive, but really stable and durable
but my T41 is still going strong, coming to 4 yrs liao
my C drive still got 2GB left
looks like will only need to buy new laptop if C drive got no more space

And why dont you buy an external HDD. 2.5 inch 80GB now cost less than $100.

I'm getting a notebook and would like to get some opinions on the brands and 'most bang for your buck' machines.
What brands seem to be the most prone to damage (both software and hardware failures)?
Is LG ok?
And, which notebook gives me the best value for its price tag?Softwares failures - hardly any, unless you are one that goes about testing this and that. About all test softwares will crash for certain machine, works fine for others, so it's no guarantee.
Hardware failures - Heng or suay... we have very reliable Acer laptops, not-so-reliable Acer ones. Same goes for all brands. LG is OK.
Best value - Acer, Dell, Lenovo (not Lenovo Thinkpad, which was previously made by IBM) , Packard Bell, some models of Compaq

All the laptops are working well.
Last time, when i was in the army, 4 IBM thinkpads spoilt within 6 months due to moistures in the air.

IBM dont do Milspec laptops...so far onli Dell,Mobileforce, Panasonic does milspec laptops....
knowing that SAF are cheapskates and soldiers misuse everything
no normal person would do what u did with the thinkpads
thinkpads are tough...especially the 60 onwards version...
i call it misuse for just leaving it outside..
accidentally spilt coffee....milo.....water on mine and it still works..the keyboard drainage really works...dropped my laptop down stairs before and it still keeps ticking...

I had owned 3 laptops before passing it down.
my first was an acer.
fairly okay, except balding keyboards, hard to presskeys and a burnt out adaptor. Cant blame as it's more than 4 years
my second was a sony
No problem with it. Passed it on as my mom needed a laptop T.T
and my current is a Hp.
Minor Problems with it's keyboard (caused by me partly).
In my opinion, go for a compaq. it has the quality and the performance.

im nt very sure.. but this is my 2nd notebook tt im using… and its toshiba all the same… i kind of condemed fujitsu as when i used to work in a notebook company in NUS during my attachement, and students who orderd the fujitsu notebook, had encoutned problems like trouble booting up, getting dead pixels and gettign blue screen… hence the technician had to come down, had us a software, so as to avoid the problems to keep cuming.. and they even had to unscrew the notebook to do smthing to it..
