Get something with a good graphics card from ATi or Nvidia. So Dell is out of the question, unless you are talking about the Dell XPS laptop. Most of Dell's laptop comes with Intel's basic graphics card which, honestly speaking, sucks.
Some of Sony's VAIO laptops have good graphics card, but VAIOs are rather expensive for the specifications they carry. Fujitsu's Lifebook are more for work than gaming, so no fancy graphics card as well. Same for IBM/Lenovo's Thinkpads. I would recommend HP/Compaq.
Added: And I would recommend Acer too.

i am from nafa multimedia course.. hmm.. actually for VC students, they are more into photoshop, illustrator, freehand and flash softwares.. not much of 3d modelling and video editing like my course.. so.. i suggest u can go for a normal core2 duo, 2gb ram computer, with built in graphics will do.. but if u wan to have smoother editing with photoshop, get a com with dedicated graphics and more ram.. mac or PC, up to u..
