Yes,

You can leave yoru External HDD connected to your USB port
permannently provided your computer recognise the uarware. If your
internal HDD is 160GB, SDRAM 2GB then you can leave the external
HDD connected shutdown and restart. if you see an error msg
"Hardware not recognised" then it is safer to remove. plug in
once the booting is up. So far I did not
encounter any problem with the HDD over heating e.t.c. as mentioned
by some souls here in this forum. external harddisk is not
connected to any programs in your C: drive.

you c when the DOS prompt runs after you boot up. it only reads
the C; drive not external devices. as long as your ventilaion fan
is operating the pc will not heat up neither is external
devices. in most cases the fan fails. aftter u switch on the pc the
first device that starts is the fan followed by c drive
e.t.c. so check your fan if it is working.

Well My advice is remove the External HDD before you shutdown
the computer. I am a photographer. I use
External HDD for all my needs though I have a very powerful
computer with plenty of internal memory.

sometimes external HDD can become corrupted. It happened to some
of my fellow photographers and my colleagues in office. Use
your external HDD daily and at the end of the day click on
the icon at the bottom righ of your pc which reads

"safely remove hardware" clcik on this and a window will
pop up. you can now unplug your hardware . This is to
protect your had disk. don't save any documents in the internal
hardisk who knows one day someone will tap into the computer and
deface the documents. I am talking from personal
experience. you can contact me if you need any further
clarification

Have a nice day

best is to scan pc for any virus, clear if any, before plugging
in.

try not to infect the backup device, cos if u infect that, in
event that ur pc really fails, all the things u transfer to ur new
pc will be tainted with virus

Yes, you can plug your hdd there forever. Yes, it will heat up
as, your hdd runs, and when it runs motion produces heat.

Durability, hmm, let's put it in this way: if your hdd in your
computer is able to work for 9hrs/10hrs and last for like 3-4 years
or more. your external hdd should be able to do the same. Just put
it in a spot where there might be a fan blowing on it.

It depends on how you configure your ext hdd to backup. (you
will have to refer to the software given for backup) Yes, this
includes hidden viruses/malware

I just bought a external HDD. Just some questions. Can i
plug the HDD permamently to the comp (Cos it seems to heat up too,
and wondering if that will affect its durability) ? Secondly, it
says that it is able to save the internal HDD in case of crashes.
In this case, the external HDD will save every file, including any
possible n hidden viruses/malware ?
