World of free(sic) softwares await in the world of Bittorrent

But a price to pay... is the slow software speed..expect to wait
up to hours or even a day for the file to be fully downloaded

A tip - try downloading a torrent that has a most number of
seeders..thats an indicator that there's alot of hosts(or somthing
like that), while leechers is the opposite lol

actually how vnc works?

vnc seems to be quite laggy compared to remote desktop.

Originally posted by Takumi2eLimit:

Hi, i got a couple of questions regarding torrents.

1) What does tracker do? What is it used for?

2) Does Bitcomet and UTorrent client have any differences? I
used bitcomet to dl a particular file which has only a seed, to try
out whether i could establish a connection, i couldnt. however for
Utorrent, i successfully did it. So are there any differences?
settings?

3) Prior to the 2nd question, does the ports make a difference
as well? Say, if i uploaded this torrent, and my ports is about
40000, the other person trying to download it has it at 50000, will
it affect the connection? Will it even establish a connection as
well?

Many Thanks in advance.

1. In short, to track users. In long, read the wiki.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BitTorrent_tracker

2. BitComet is banned by some trackers as it is notorious for
getting the users a high download speed even if they did not upload
anything. That may explain why you are unable to download the
torrent via BitComet.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bitcomet#DHT_Exploit

3. No, it does not make a difference and would not affect the
possibility of establishing a connection with another user, unless
it is already in use by an application on your computer / the
computer on the other end. To be safe, avoid port numbers that are
already assigned to an existing protocol. A simple rule of thumb
would be to choose one that is between 50000 and 59999.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Port_numbers

alwaysdisturbed, i appreciate your intention.

frankly, if that is what i was searching for, i wouldnt have to
post. please be sensible. thanks.

i don't really know the actual usage of a tracker, thus the
question mark at the end and perhaps assist you to ponder a
little more. because i thought it can be roughly guessed
to how the term was derived.
