No point talking about players from the past... Otherwise we might as well ask Bobby Moore to come back from the dead to captain them... We are only talking about the present squad of players...
I think Rio will make a better choice... A better defender to Terry also... Terry had his chance and the whole team fail badly and didn't even qualify for the Euros... He is like leading them to nowhere... and his well documented behaviour while he was captain... leave a lot to be desired...

Shearer one season wonder????? you watching your EPL from where? Mars? or Sentosa underwater world????
if between the two, i'll put my money on Rio, Terry IMHO (Just my.. you can choose to defer), is probably a better and more consistence defender then Rio and is more vocal too but in Rio the England manager will have a calmer type of player who will helps cool the head of Ronney and the younger players when things get tough for them.. and that might just be what Capallo is looking for..

JT: Let me be Fab leader

JOHN TERRY last night made an emotional plea to Fabio Capello: “Give me a second chance as England captain.”
Chelsea defender JT held the armband until Capello took over from Steve McClaren at the end of last year. The Italian (right) will finally name his choice as skipper on Tuesday after trialling Terry, Rio Ferdinand, Steven Gerrard and David Beckham in friendlies.
Ferdinand is favourite but Terry admitted: “Of course I want the England captaincy — I’d be mad to sit here and say no. “I’ve been lucky to get the armband in the past and those memories will stay with me for ever. “I’m sure whoever Mr Capello announces as the captain will have the best day of his life next week — whether it be myself, Rio, Stevie G or Lamps.
"The main thing is that England as a team move forward and the captain helps drag them together. “Maybe I do deserve another chance at the captaincy, but maybe Rio does, maybe Stevie G does, maybe Lamps does. “We’re all at top clubs, playing at the top level, and all feel deep down we deserve the armband.
“But it’s one man making the big decision Having seen the players around the training ground he knows what he’s going to get and whoever he chooses I’ll fully respect. “If it’s not me I’ll walk up to the person, shake their hand and wish them well.”
Terry was helping launch the Premier League’s campaign to stamp out dissent and bad behaviour towards match officials. The top-flight clubs have signed up to a charter vowing to show respect towards referees.
TV monitors will be banned from the dugouts and refs will hold meetings with the captains before games to thrash out any potential problems. Terry admits he has been one of the worst offenders with a history of haranguing referees.
The Chelsea star said: “I hold up my hands up. I overstepped the mark a few times. “But it’s unfair to pick out one person or one club. "I could show you 100 videos of different players and different clubs committing offences. We’ve all done it. “But that’s in the past now and we move on trying to make it better.
“We still need the tackles flying in and the high tempo in games to let games flow — that’s why we’re the best league in the world.”

Crying after losing a match is unbecoming of a captain even if he admitted to it. A captain has to inspire his team not just through his words but his actions as well. If a captain breaks down and cry, do you think the team as a whole will respect him?
Look at some of the previous Captains in Premier League history
Dennis Wise, Eric Cantona, Alan Shearer, Steven Gerrard, Tim Sherwood and Tony Adams. These guys inspire because they don't break down and cry after losing a trophy/match. They understand that it's over and the team should prepare for future challenges/matches.
