i think it has more to do with the brand. lecoq sportif makes figure hugging jersey. it has its advantages as it makes tugging difficult.
from a retail business point of view, it may not makes much sense. ppl still like their jersey comfortable.
i recalled puma makes a skin tight soccer jersey for cameroon once but fifa disapproves of it.
