Two Qantas jumbo jets - including the plane involved in the Manila mid-air explosion last July - have collided while being towed at Avalon.

"Two 747s at our Avalon maintenance base have come into contact with each other during towing this morning," a Qantas spokesman said.

"Both aircraft sustained some damage, the extent of that is still being assessed."

The spokesman confirmed one of the planes was the aircraft that was forced to make an emergency landing earlier this year when its oxygen tank exploded mid-air, blowing a hole in the plane's fuselage.

Repairs to the aircraft involved in the July incident were undertaken in Manila by Boeing, but further work was being done at Avalon.

The plane has not carried passengers since the emergency landing four months ago.

Staff involved in this morning's collision, which occurred about 9.30am, have been stood down pending a full investigation, a Qantas spokesman said.

He said it was too early to determine the cause of the crash.

The airline believes both 747s will be out of action for at least a few days.

Roughly six months after unveiling their plans to merge, Delta Air Lines and Northwest Airlines have secured clearance for the deal from the US Department of Justice.

Executives from both airlines have repeatedly stated their expectations of gaining DOJ approval by yearend.

The department says it "has determined that the proposed merger between Delta and Northwest is likely to produce substantial and credible efficiencies that will benefit US consumers and is not likely to substantially lessen competition".

DOJ further explains the merger will produce cost savings in airport operations, information technology and fleet optimization.

Previously Delta and Northwest have estimated annual synergies of $2 billion, which should ramp up in 2012, and integration costs of $600 million over three years.

The two carriers still have to close the transaction, which also should occur before the end of the year. At that time Northwest shareholders will turn over their stock in exchange for Delta shares. The combined entity will operate under the Delta brand.

Recently Delta CEO Richard Anderson told employees the merger's importance is even more relevant given the current global economic uncertainty.

Anderson highlighted the new carrier's ability to expand its international network, allowing it to take market share away from other carriers.

I'm not sure if you about this thing called the Direct Poly Admission (DPA) because i applied for this and I am already offered a place in Ngee Ann Poly. My L1R5 for my prelims is 15, i am good in maths but then science im just getting a passing grade and i am just hoping that i can better for O level. I called them the other day then they say try to maintain my eyesight at 325 degrees and keep it below 350 degrees. i also ask them "Now that my eyesight is so bad, is it that have to get excellent grades to get in" and he gave me a yes but he ask me to try. when he said the yes His tone to me sound a little negative... i was a little disheartened after that talk with him... i scared i next year cannot get in because it seems extremely tough to get in... Are you also a SYFC member?

Lol.... Not a prob, if ur prelim L1R5<20 gonna join JC and hd all SYFC requirement than don't wait... apply. Well, if ur L1R5 >20 & want 2 go Poly. Apply once ur 'O' level results is out.

Hey rainbow 25, thanks a lot for that advice:D You have any experience in that stage of entering the SYFC or have any friends who have similar experience? When my eyesight is so bad, they say that i would have to score very well in order to get in but my results also not very good. The only good thing i have is my CCA record.

Anyone who has ever used budget airlines know only too well how uncomfortable it can be: long queues, cramped seats and every tiny extra costs you.

But at least they are never told to get out and help push their plane.

That is exactly what happened to a group of passengers in China were after their jet broke down just after landing.

The CRJ7 plane, which had just flown some 500 miles from Guilin in the south of the country with 69 passengers and seven crew members on board, conked out before it could taxi to the arrivals terminal at Zhengzhou, capital of Henan province.

At first, airport staff were the only ones required to help push, but they could not budge the plane.

Even with the combined muscle power of staff and passengers, it took the group nearly two hours to push the plane about 1,000 yards to a side lane.

'Thank God it was only a 20-ton medium-sized airplane,' said one of the airport workers. 'If it were a big plane, it would have knocked us out.'

The jet was still parked in the side lane today waiting for technicians arriving on the next flight to fix the problem.
