  I have this weired doubt...
  
  You go for a formal dinner and occuppy your chair. Usually all the plates, towels etc will be neatly arranged on table and will be difficult to identify which belongs to you...What is the thumbrule? Need to take the one on left side or right side?

  Depending on the number of courses of food there is.
  
  And why would it be difficult? Cutleries will be arranged on the left and right of the plate. Nuhtin difficult if you are seated correctly.

  Happened to me once...especially when the space on the table is less. all the tings are arranges so close without leaving any gap between them. If you accidentally take a wrong one, the person sitting next to you will be searcing for his items.so embarassing to see that during a formal dinner
