How many sharks have been cruelly killed in order for us to eat shark fin soup?

The Chinese term for shark fin soup is "yuchi (fish wing)" soup.By right, it should be "yuqi (fish fin)" soup.The Chinese  don't know the mysterious wrong term used for the soup!

Acutally  shark fin has little taste.I think the shark fin soup tastes quite similar without shark fins.IChefs  can come up with other soups or use other ingredients such as abalone or fish meat in place of shark fins for the shark fin soup.I suggest the expensive shark fin soup be replaced by the expensive bird nest soup which can be taken at the end of the dinner.

I suggest the govt  ban the imort of shark fins.

Expensive but no nutrition value...why eat shark's fin?

Bird's nest has nutrition contents and there's no need to kill the bird. Just rob it's nest. The bird will build another nest for the next harvest....hehehe

The effects wont be so castrastrophic if we eat cloned shark's fin

Ban the shark's fin, provided we ban hunting as well.

Considering our ( chinese) culture and the profit it brings to the industries ( F&N and fishermen ), i think a ban is near impossible.

Actually they use dogfish fin  if you are talking about cheap soups. They are also sharks but in abundance last time . The really expensive ones are where they give you the whole damn fin plus bone. Those come from bigger sharks

Since Scuba Diving..... I have not eaten Sharkfins for the last 4 years...

But an outright 'Ban' will be next to impossible. Even in S'pore, there are ppl who still believes that without sharkfins during Chinese Wedding Dinner.... it will be a lose of 'FACE' for the couple.

The worst news is..... as ppl in China get richer.... they would want to show off their $$$$ by eating more of such things.

just raise the price make it super expensive la why ban it in general

Actually the concept of not eating shark fin , will not stop the shark killing. The shark are caught in the fishing net when people are fishing for other fishes. They are going to die anyway as .... why not use their fins and meat .... !!! http://www.iwmc.org/PDF/StraitsTPress.pdf

Other people who told you that they just fish for shark then cut the shark fin and throw back in the sea is crap !!! that is what they want you to believe - which is a very small percent. A lot of the fisherman would rather catch other better meat fish, but if they caught shark, well they will sell and eat their meat also !!!

you go jump down into a shark infested area, see if the sharks ban human feed, if you survive then you come back to ban their fins bah, lol fool

Yeah my kind of of an idea too. i think the government should ban shark hunting rather than ban the selling of shark fin. So that those sharks that are accidentally caught in fishermen's net still has some value.

Pig is one of the smartest aninimal around....some say smarter than dogs....and if you have seen how they slaughter pigs, you would have become a vegetarian.

 And do you know how they slaughter chicken in your typical farm all over the world? They slit their throats and throw them into boiling water even before they are dead!!

The idea is not to ban sharksfin. The idea is to untilize the entire shark instead of throwing the carcases back into the sea. Then again....when the carcase is back into the sea, it becomes fishmeals for sotong and dugongs so...

The issue is not about being double-standard; we should focus on responsible and sustaining farming instead.

I think the worst thing is to be a toopid protester and reject already prepared food and letting it go to waste.

I'm not some green movement guy la...but my numbskull tells me that anything that can make a conscious adjustment for it's own survival has feelings and will feel 'pain'.

Plant will bend and climb to get sunlight. That is consciousness to me. Ants will avoid danger. I cannot say ants being so small can't feel pain right? Cos i can't say a retard human will feel less pain than a PhD...

If you all look around for shark fin video , you alway find this only this one same video of show some fishermen cut off shark fins then dump the shark back to sea 

Why is it the same video ? Who film it is clearing on the deck of the ship among the crew, who allow him to freely even zoom in .... which isn't it strange ? if those fishermen are so desperate to make money that they cut the fins only and dump the shark will they let a camera man on board to slow down their work and film evidence that kill their lifehood ?

To me - it kind of look to scripted !!! Some shark lover may have pay some fishermen to do that video ... which give the wrong impression that sharks are taken only for their fins !!!

that my friend. is a very good answer. I am serious. about the conscious adjustments + survival = 'some sort of feeling' reactionary ? but u know some biologists are gonna bust a hole in that logic right ?
