Chinese language is not that bad in Singapore. Students nowadays deem it as uncool to speak mandarin, thus most of them prefer to communicate in English.
Also, I think the government's attitude about reduing the standard(making it easier) to pass mandarin wrong. Afterall, some people needs more than a push to learn.
But it's possible to be proficient in both languages. It just takes the correct attitude.

I assumed that you meant our singapore english is also lousy as well.... probably planned by German or japanese -
I am wondering about this question too. What I feel is that, we are getting in contact in too many languages I guess.. Of course focusing too much on English is another reason.. Even our English is not fantastic I should say.. We dont get to speak pure Mandarin or pure English in our everyday life, sad to say. We mix different languages together.. Of course there are some who can master both too. But most of us dont.. Thats why our grammar for English and Mandarin are wrong at times I guess..
As for speaking wise, that's the same problem.. We wont be able to speak like news broadcaster or such, unless we do speak in that way everyday.. Otherwise, we would speak like what we are right now. No offence, but take Hong Kong people for example. If you listen to their English or Mandarin, there's a strong Cantonese accent there. Same problem here.. Just that we got mixed accent instead..
But for Chinese language, its hard to improve in the near future.. Many parents still have the mentality of Chinese language is of a lower class as compared to English.. But let's not forget that China is coming up strong.. One day, instead of us learning english, Westerners would be learning Chinese instead..
Above are just my opinions though.. Hmmm.. Can there be a Chinese forum instead? For those who like to improve to interact in Chinese instead..

THe lecturers of the CHinese studies degree all gave their introduction talk in ENGLISH!! And SPOKE in ENGLISH!?

I am an example of an evil Angmor who can speak Mandarin. Has it integrated me any further? Nil. But hey, that's here in sg, in China, i get accepted much more easily
, so i think that shows barriers in Sg regardless of language.
I don't know why there is this mentality in SG that Mandarin is a lower class language.. Maybe Beijing needs to send Chinese ppl onto the moon, or needs to push its weight around more, or fire more rockets into space, or needs more $ budget surplus to make Chinese all over the world suddenly be proud to be associated with being Chinese. -

No i never went for any class there, only went for the open houses and course intro lectures, i am in your army remember? Anyway, what i meant was.. the NUS version of NTU's china studies thing.. same thing, the intro the lecturers gave was in English, even though it was for a Chinese course.
