Singaporeans should stop faking any accent and start speaking clearly & properly. There's nothing wrong with us sounding unBritish / unAmerican.

We have our own accent, and as long as we are clear in our speech, let no one say anything negative about it. -
come on man.the westereners are supposed to be the powerhouses in everything.warfare,money trading etc so generally it is human nature to follow the "great" ones..and btw our singapore tradition especially singlish should nothing to be proud of,especially because it came from english and we are just modifying it with other languages.so dun feel angry over this matter,as long as we know and uderstand our heritage,it is ok to follow any road u wan to go on and lead ur life.

I do advocate frequent proper spoken and written usage of the language. Speaking clearly and properly in a Singaporean accent does not mean using Singlish.
To clarify, Singlish does have its place but it should not be used in formal channels of communication.
Nonetheless, I thank the thread-starter for such a topic as timely as this when Singapore aspires to be an educational hub of her own. There's no way it can be convincing if her people can't speak confidently and clearly. -

It's how we keep our informal speech for personal conversations and switch to Standard Singapore English for corporate and work purposes.In other words, keep the accent, but adopt neutral phrasing and proper grammar. -

I don't speak Singlish but I have a Singaporean accent. Although I speak with angmos everyday, I don't adopt their accent. I get them to adopt mine!

why cant singaporean speak like singaporean?
because we are not original. when we speak to westerners we must sound like them else will will be deemed as lousy english speakers, when we speak to china'a chinese we must sound like them, else we will be deemed as lousy mandarin speakers. why? cos the government do not want singapore to be original to have our own accent. -

Yeah, why can't someone speak the way they like without you telling them how to do it?
Nothing wrong with the accent. Just that Singaporeans more often than not, speak with improper grammar and mispronounce words. -
Dear Guyfawkes80,
I think you're generalising. Some of the Asians here may have grown up overseas, or spent a long time there. If you've lived overseas for a long time, & people find it difficult to understand your "Singie" accent, you'd at least try to adopt the accent there to make yourself better understood. This is a bad e.g. but would you want to get an elephant ear sandwich if you've ordered steak?
Plus, Not everybody speaks Singlish, some prefer to speak proper English. Is there anything wrong with that? To each their own, Nobody's trying to force YOU to speak proper English, right?
Moreover, Not all girls who go out with caucasians are SPGs, some genuinely fell in love with their bfs/husbands, who happened to be caucasians/mixed/whatever. Of course, discriminating against your own race is undesirable.
Oh well, I used to be like you when I was young & more extreme in my opinions.
