Has efforts to promote SG unique identity fail in the 90s?

The Moses Lim stereotypes, Phua chu kang. gurmit singh and Under one roof, these shows can remember?
They were made IMO to distract us from foreign infleunces, but then the penetration of cable television in the middle of '90s brought people dancing to the tunes of Ricky Martin, Macarena and Boy bands.
Ask any teen out there , he will think it is alien to follow a Moses lim stereotype or disgracing to behave like Phua Chu Kang now. When i was i NTU in that times, we used to imitate the Under one roof characters, joke and talk like them. Now what was "under one roof" had been thrown
it out of the roof. And like what SPG culture (around since the 80s) taking over now.
Has those efforts 2 promote our identity failed?

under one roof is an undercoer propaganda show. it always toks bout current issues and upcomming publicity campaigns....

because project a bad image of singapore?. Since we are going global now, i think it is better PCK change his ways. We are not a seclusive society anymore and cant affrod to do so.
When shows like Buffy the Vampire Slayer, some sci fi weekly shows, Savannah , The Bold and the Beautiful took up more viwership in local TV in the 96 period onwards. Then reality TV. Local entertainment was going down the drain. -
and gone also the days when Batik Shirt was in fashion . Walk down with SPG in the 80s down in orchard road wearing a bAtik.

PCK is a comedy. show features an ah beng contractor n revolves around his family. under sterotyping he is 'expected' to be a beng n speak in singlish / broken english.
remember. its comedy. we have to learn to laugh at ourselves. the consumers did. tts y PCK was the higest rated local sitcom wen it 1st aired.
PCK havg to speak proper english (n even making an episode whr he goes n takes a speak good english course) is crap. its like asking mr bean to go for plastic surgery cause britain doesnt tink his face is good publicity material. or how bout asking drew carrey to go on a diet cause its a bad example for our healthy diet (less sugar n less oil) campaign.
why not hit much much closer to home. ask our 'queen' of caldecott hill to learn to speak fleunt english n not memorise scripture for broadcasts?

The shows like Millenium, Savannah, The outer limits, Tiwlight zone, Star Trek were all aired in the wee hours of the night in the '90s.
During primetime the local shows were aired like Under One Roof. -
Worthy of mention is the effect of the movie Titanic brought about a change in people's thinking.

ill always have a good laugh wen they re-telecast old local shows n call it n encore telecast... like who the heck asked for it in the 1st plc?
n wen they show hollywood movies (no matter how old they r) 'for the 1st time on television" hello it was liked aired on HBO or some other channel months ago....
n also the desperate attempt to get higher air time rating... telecasting long movies for over a period of 2days... e.g. harry potter / lotr...

The whole singlish/local trend died out after mid 90s. COmplete westernisation took over. Given the fact that movies like Titanic & The Matrix helped fuel the western glamourisation..
