Potong Pasir MP Chiam to pursue government funds for upgrading
By Valarie Tan, Channel NewsAsia
Mr Chiam See Tong, who retained his Potong Pasir seat with slightly over half of the valid votes, will now pursue the government for funds to upgrade the flats in the constituency.
The lunchtime crowd gave him a hero's welcome when he held his victory parade on Sunday.
Mr Chiam is the chairman of the Singapore Democratic Alliance.
After a quick lunch on Sunday, Mr Chiam, flanked by party members, got on a convoy to spread his appreciation for all the residents in the ward.
Looking ahead, Mr Chiam said, at the next parliament sitting, he would pursue the government for the $80 million for upgrading works promised by Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong if the PAP had won Potong Pasir.
Mr Chiam said: "The government has the money, and since they've promised the upgrading in Potong Pasir, I think they should release the money to us."
Mr Chiam feels the election was a tough contest and a good learning experience for his younger candidates.
He said: "I'm not really disappointed, but the fact the percentage of opposition candidates have increased is already a big improvement for the opposition."
And despite their loss at Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC, the SDA team will remain there and work on recruiting more members. - CNA/ch
It will be interesting to see how Mr. Chiam take this issue,
