Well, I don't think time machine is an idiotic invention, it's a rather dangerous thing to have.
I think something that can allow us to communicate with outer space aliens (if there are any) or something to allow us to communicate with animals, some sort of translator, that would be cool.
Teleportation device -> probably will make big logistic companies redundant unless they are the only ones who can afford them.
