i think the real problem comes when singaporeans breathe too much into the advertisements.
Let's face it, who here watches Singapore idol, Let alone American idol for the talent?? I certainly am watching American Idol to hear the comments that Simon has to say and i particularly enjoy watching the auditions as you get to see those who have been "decieved" into thinking that they can sing but end up getting the "straight-up" comments from the judges?
And also, the commercials change later in the programme's run up to the finale. Look at season 1, the adverts slowly changed from "Make-fun-of-those-who-can't-sing" to "who-will-be-our-next-singapore-idol-?"
Plus, bottomline: adverts are to entice you to watch the programme. And if it did, then it served it's purpose!!
