USB Device problem

hopefully someone can save me here
Whenever i plug something in the usb port the computer pops up a window to ask me install USB DEVICE, but i dont have a cd or anything i duno how to solve it grr.
Then when i plug in my portable hardisk my com hangs, but when i plug in my printer it never hang, so i dunno wats the problem with the usb. My hardisk has no problem becoz i tried it on school coms already no problem.
Can someone please give me some advice thanks.

what operating system are you using?
Windows 2000 onwards, do not need a driver for portable HDD
like WinME, WinXP.
Windows 98 and older, NEED driver for portable HDD.
like Win95 -
if u're using windows xp and driver does not automatically install, there are advanced options available for disk management via Start -> Run -> "diskmgmt". if u can see the disk, look out for the error message and see wat u can do about it.
another issue here could be that there is not enough power available through the usb for the portable hdd. -
firstly, there should be a driver CD-Rom that comes with the harddisk. install it to see if it solve the problem.
I'm using Windows ME and i came across this problem too when i bought my external harddisk weeks ago. this is what i do. although i don't need to install driver, after plugging in the USB, the OS will prompt me to insert the Windows CD and install some files.
after that i need to assign a "alphabet" for my disk and reformat it.
if Windows 2000 and XP u can just plug and play. -
but theres this very very strange relationship with my com and hdd.
com has no problem with other usb devices except hdd.
hdd has no problem with other pc except this com.
den when i plug in my hdd the com will hang i canot do anything, my friends have no idea wats wrong. -

got other usb port?
try other usb or install a new usb port then -
incompatible USB may cause it to have a problem. although shld have no problem connecting a new usb device to a older usb. -
