Why are people protesting against the world bank IMF?

I heard there was a riot once? what does the world bank actually do? why are people unhappy

thats where alot of world leaders would meet..
if you protest there, they would hear you and influence their decisions when making policy - which i think alot were already made beforehand anyways.
so now its more like a funfair.. they probably watch em protestors like monkeys in a circus. -
what decisions would be made? i heard it was smth to do with currency.

they will discuss about currencies, interest rates and all that kind of things u would never think about money except those in ur bank and wallet.
reason why protests are held is cos of the wide income gap in many countries.notice it is the poor protesting and not the rich (duh). also of some international policies that may influence the income of the already poor.
there's alot of reasons pple protest lah. u want can go batam join in the fun also
anyway they are not protesting against the IMF meetings, they are using the oppounity to protest against policies and this is the perfect moment for their voices to be heard. -
a lot of issues.
debts of poor countries.
opening up of markets in poorer countries etc.
poor countries generally are against the policies of IMF. -

IMF is as big as events like Olympics and World Cup.
Yet, more importantly, it affects the currency, job opportunies, trading, and worldwide economics.
Like someone might have mentioned. It will widen the gap between rich and the poor, espcially causing the poor to be much poorer.

The IMF which was held in hong kong last year, or the year before resulted in riots by farmers against who, i;m not so sure.. i believe they are already poor enough and they harvest their crops and can only feed their family. But they still have to pay tax due to the decision made by the ministers..
during the previous years, there were also riots along the road, they formed up a human dragon or whatever it is call, a human chain. They locked their arms together and form up along the main road to jam up the traffic..
The situation was very chaotic.. -

Announce or not, people do read newspapers and can recognize certain people. Even if they fly over secretly, there will definitely have some people who can recognize the big shots and call the reporters. Might as well make it a big affair.
