If Odex comes up with an Itunes like download service for animes THEY hold
exclusive license to,
And IF, they offer HIGHER QUALITY than the free Fansubs,
And are able to release their subs as fast as free fansubs can,
I don't mind paying for the download.

Seriously, if they used their brain, they could have just start their VOD thing and do a positive marketing and not sue people in the first place, then things will be a lot different. -

But what is very wrong is it doesn't last. I only "own" the product for 7 days? You might as tell me to rent it from a shop.
If they insist on this service, I suggest that set up an anime library/anime rental shop because nobody shall own anything except them. -
Well thats also another issue that they have to consider. A system similar to iTunes allows users to download mp3s and keep them, I don't see why Odex should only allow users to keep for only 7 days.
If they persist in that, the same story will repeat itself. Users would prefer to download fansubs as they can keep them and archive them themselves. So Odex or whoever is setting up this service would be shooting themselves in the foot again.
Its not a matter of whether Odex deserves a 2nd chance. Its a matter of anime lovers doing the right thing. If there is a regional licensed distributor who is coming up with good quality subbed anime and reasonably fast, we should honor them, and the law as well.
With broadband access, high speed connections, the world has changed and moved faster. Licensed distributors have to keep up with the times and move equally fast or lose out to fan subbers who do. They cannot expect to be competitive if they keep releasing subs so slowly and expect anime lovers to wait.
Match the fansub with quality and speed, and who ever who runs this video on demand service, Odex or not, would not just win lawsuits against copyright infringers, but also the hearts and minds of the anime fans as well.
Another interesting phenomenon is the DRM thing as well. The view of what intellectual property is, is slowly taking a broadly recognised shape. Since IP always belongs its owner, consumers would no longer have rights to have a copy of the IP, but rather, rights to access it only.
Hence, accessing the IP outside any assigned time or contract, would result in a breach of IP laws. Or at least that is what I foresee how IP laws would probably evolve. -
Obviously odex will be out of that race, considering the fracas they're in now.

for afew reasons
- bad subs kills the anime anyways.. ever heard of " even the best jokes can't make one laugh if you english is fuuked! " ?
- if they cared about the people and did not want money,
they could have just issued out warning letters to everyone, give a solid case with the court backing them up and tell downloaders if they do not stop downloading anime immediately, they will be sued. i'm sure it'll have the same desired effect on the people

If ODEX rise again they will expand their business into japanese dramas, documentaries, movies, games or anything that can be downloaded. Then they will repeat the same procedure.
