Does they have the right to blackmail people and ask for compensation for something that they do not own?

PacNet - no. Because they have proven that ODEX isn't the exclusive copyright owner.
If he's the former, I say he can continue complaining, ODEX won't give a damn. What's done cannot be undone. Unless he wishes to fight it out in court. -
I still think that it is not right for odex to seek payment for things that they do not even own in the first place.
It is completely blackmailing and who knows what happened after the payment? Other company comes with the same list and blackmail my friend again then how???
The animes that he downloaded are fansubbed that is not available in the market as of today... -
That's what we think. It's been discussed before... but the problem is, some have already paid up before they discover that ODEX isn't the exclusive copyright owner or has the exclusive rights to distribute it.

My friend had not paid the 3k that they demanded from him...
I told him that it is like blackmailing lor. Odex did not deserve a single cent that they demanded from him and who knows another company will be sending him the exact same thing and demand another payment?
After which, another company. Is the authorities in SG actually allow this type of openly blackmailing??? -
As far as I know, the authorities have not stepped in.

Even if they can't help them to get back the fines they paid, can't they just send one warning letter to ODEX and say that they have done so?
It's not very hard. When ODEX tried to defend that its subtitles are bad due to censorship, MDA stepped in and said that this isn't the case.
I simply can't believe the relevant authorities can't step in and say the same thing that they have done wrongly. -

Well... so far none has been hauled to court for not paying... so nothing has exploded. I just bought an anime called The voices of a distant star from kinokuniya.. distributed by Blue Max.. quite sad lei i wanna buy some of the odex dvds.. but its ODEX.. sianz.. and blue max onli had 2 dvds..
