Money Changer scandal

Was in Far east plaze trying to buy some foreign currency. Had made it very clear to them that i will pay sin dollars for aussie dollars. They gave me a rate and i decided to go ahead as it seems okay. Once i said "okay"...straight came their calculator and a different rate was given saying they have mistaken that i am selling instead of buying.
What the hell...3 shops that i went to had made the same mistake!

you must always say if you are buying or selling.
selling foreign currency gets a lower rate than buying foreign currency -
read the board and look for selling if u wan to change ur S$ to foreign. it's the amount u pay to get a unit of foreign currency.
mustafa and suntec are probably the most reputable in this trade. no tricks, reasonably good rates.

Some just... pick up the phone, ask a bit here and there, then "Ok the rate is blahblahblah".. -

I thought all the money changer traders in Far East plaze are Indians. Some pretent not to understand english and some just played around with you like what i have mentioned.
One shop gave me a price and when i wanted to proceed, he walked away and said his colleague will serve me. His colleague said the first person don't know anything and thought i wanted to sell instead of buying. I am sure they both hear me saying "I give you Sin, you give me Aussie, what is your rate?"
No way i am giving in to you!

oh dear. can you do these money changing at banks? i thought all money changer standard rates wan? haiz im still naive.

BTW the one at Parkway, the chinese one nearest the main entrance door... cheated me before...
So nowadays I calculate what to expect first, the total amount, not just the exchange rate, at least in my head, before I ask. -

but i heard airport money changers, while not giving good rates, allows you to redeem your foreign currency at the same rate as u've changed if u have the receipt when u touch down. -
i never know they cheat this way..

Far East Plaza not sure but be careful at Lucky Plaza. Changed money there once and while the rate was correct, the amount was wrong! My mental maths told me the calculated amount was not correct but then when you use their calculator, each time I keyed the result is the same. So, I asked for a receipt and name card, went home to use my own calculators (several), and the result was different from the money changer. Immediately I called and the guy over there asked how much was the difference and to come and collect! So, I went back, the guy who served me was not there, so I wacked that fellow behind the counter loud and told him the difference was an amount - you guess - I got the real difference plus some more (I lied to the fellow). So, I got my correct change, plus transport and time and some spare!
Serve them right! I suspect they rigged their calculator, and had been short-changing and cheating tourists and SGreans who didn't bring their own calculator. I was surprised they didn't make any fuss or denial, just pay without question!
Morale of story: bring your own calculator when you change money. Ask several money changers for rate before you decide. -

there's a money changer at northpoint level 1, rates are pretty good

Just ask for a receipt everytime u change.. in that case, u can always go back to them if anything goes wrong, or if wanna make a police report. btw, most modern phone have calculator function lah!!!

Earlier, i went to buy my Aussie currency finally at Lot 1 shopping centre at CCK mrt station.
All the banks i have visited in cck does not have the currency.
There is just this money changer at the basement level. The guy before me had bought some Thai Baht from him exchanging at sgp$500, but the money changer only converted $400 for him and he came back screaming at him and demanded him to pay up the short-coming. The angry customer interrupted us in the midst of my transaction so i knew the whole story.
I think the next time, i will be buying all my foreign currenies in the Bank.
So next time, before you leave the counter...make sure you count the money to make sure you get the right money. Scarey.
