Singapore to help in search for five missing Singaporeans: PM Lee
SINGAPORE : Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong says he is saddened to learn of the boating incident in Phnom Penh, where five Singaporeans have gone missing.
In a statement to the media, Mr Lee says he shares the deep concerns of the families of the five missing Singaporeans.
He says the Singapore government will do all it can to provide the necessary assistance.
The SAF will be deploying a team to help in the search and rescue efforts.
According to a foreign ministry spokesman, the families of the five have been contacted and some members of the families is heading to Phnom Penh, where they will be given an update on the situation.
Mr Lee says he will also like to express his sincere appreciation to the Cambodian authorities for the help they have rendered in rescuing the 17 Singaporeans and the ongoing search and rescue operations, which have been widened to cover a larger area.
The five had gone missing on Friday around 4:20pm, after their dragon boat capsized during the annual Cambodia-ASEAN Traditional Boat Race.
Reports say the incident took place as the crew of 22 was rowing back to the starting line at the end of the 1.5-kilometre Cambodia-ASEAN Traditional Boat Race.
According to Mr Kwek Siew Jin, President of the Singapore Dragon Boat Association, the boat was swept by a sudden wave and hit a pontoon, causing the boat to overturn.
Rescue boats were immediately deployed, but five of the crew could not be found.
They are said to have not worn lifejackets for this race.
17 other Singaporeans who were rescued were treated for minor injuries.
They've been discharged and are now staying in their hotel rooms.
Singapore's Foreign Affairs Ministry and its Embassy in Cambodia say they are working with the local Cambodian authorities in the search and rescue operations and Singapore's Ambassador to Cambodia is also at the location.
The Ministry says Singaporeans who are concerned about relatives and friends in Cambodia participating in the event can contact:
Ministry of Foreign Affairs
Hotline: 63320000 (24 hours)
Fax Number: 6476-7302
