First and foremost, I also hate people who jaywalk and put their lives at risk in the process. I would even utter things in my car when I am driving when I encounter such people, that "if you don't want your life, that's your business, but please, I still want my car."
However, as a driver on the road, we should always be on high alert and be ready for any situations that crop up without expectations. This is also part of the assessment when a driver sits for his/her driving test. If he/she is not alert enough, it's an immediate failure.
With that, when an accident really happens (*touchwood*), the driver will have to bear the consequences and it would be hard for any charges to be pressed against the jaywalker because relatively speaking, the jaywalker is "weaker" than the driver in a car.
Accept that, and move on, ya?
There are certain situations where it can't be avoided.
I seriously feel that if you want to jaywalk, do it at your own risk. Don't anyhow jump out of nowhere...
If you are too stupid to look out for cars, then don't jaywalk.
They not only put their lifes at risk, but the drivers and other road users' too.
There should not be laws to protect jaywalkers. If they get hit, and survive, they get punished.
