Career choice

Im going to study life science in university and I m currently working in a bank environment. I just get the feeling that Im not at all interested in the bank job. The numbers, debit, credit, payment, invoice, they all dun make sense to me at all!! Is that normal when at this age you r going to determine your own career path?
My friends chose their career path soley based on monetary rewards, e.g. banking, they studied accountancy in NUS just becos accountant commands gd pay. I seriously dun feel like that.....I feel a career is for life...Im suffering everyday at the bank doing all these stuffs senseless to me. If I was to study Banking & finance in Uni, I would drop dead immediately.
I feel you gotta choose a career you r interested in not for the monetary rewards but for the experiece, the joy in working. But my friends argue that llife in spore is hard so must choose money first....blah blah blah....I disagree... -
it's obviously a toss up between the 2 and other factors. just that how important you thinkk each factor is. you are not wrong. but do you enjoy life sciences?

hmm i think money is the most important thing about a job too.
i wan to learn lotsa $$, den retire before 40 and go do wad i wan.
maybe go deliver pizza, slack whole day or whatever and yet can provide for my future ladyboss and small bosses.
if not, i dun think i can truly enjoy what i want to do w/o worryin about money.

Well.....how much money do you really want or need? your friends are right to say that in Singapore you got to have money to enjoy a good life....but the point, is who defines good life? You have to define it for yourself.
So, if you are the type who wants to lead a luxurious lifestyle, and retire by 40, then money (and not interests) should be your priority. On the other hand if your lifestyle isn't extravagant and you don't mind working well into your late-life, then you better chose your interests. Remember, the amount of money one WANTS is a hell lot more than the amount one NEEDS.
one more question.......is life sciences your cup of tea? How can you be sure you wont feel the same about working in life sciences like how you are feeling working in a bank? Whats your age btw? -
i think interests is everything, as long as ur interests can earn u some money, you can live happily.

it's always the case of interest vs rice bowl
studying wat u like is easier......
jumping on the bandwagon may or may not derive the results u want
if something is popular.....confirm many ppl flock to it....
high supply will end up with too many ppl fighting for limited jobs.... lower pay......
if u need 3yrs to get the paper, think of wat can happen 3 yrs later, esp in SG, where things are progressing so fast all the time.... -

If your job is the kind with normal kind of paid and you want to manage your monetary for your retirement, then perhaps you should start finanical planning for your retirement. Keep track of your spending and saving now..
or immigrate.. singapore is stressful place to live in.
Whatever it is, you must enjoy studying life sci and understand the job market for life sci in singapore if you are planning to work here. -

How old are you/profession/education level?
I'm determined to make it into investment banking (IB) solely because of the monetary rewards, and the many doors it'll open up for me. None of my banker friends, and their acquaintances as well, went into IB because they love their job. It's because IB provides the best payoff/lowest risk to making big bucks. Sure the first 3-6 years when you are still an analyst/associate are hell, even the pay isn't that great. It's when you leave the company (hopeful a bulge bracket, if not a boutique will do) after you get your graduate degrees that the path would get easier. Some would go into portfolio management, others hedge funds, the older ones would go into consulting. -
Not everyone will "make it big" with investment banking. Follow your passion and the money will take care of itself. Without an authentic interest, you will find that you burn out easily, have low work performance, etc. which may very well be counter-productive. You're doing it for life; your degree and training dictate so. Do something that you love enough to overlook the monetary rewards that come with it.

True that though. Only the top few will actually make it to front office trading or quant analysis. As for me, I'm only doing it for the name, then jumping ship to a music related company, since that's where my interest ultimately lies (music). it's true that you ought to do something you are keen in...but bear in mind it doesn't always pay off...once you mature further you'll have different perspective...life sciences is a tough call, unless you are prepared to go all the way to phd level, it's unlikely you'll do anything more than administrative or even sales function....as phillip yeo once said, only a-star smarties get to do research, local uni life science grads are fit to wash test tubes....harsh indeed but pretty true, research work requires phd....

Aiya! dun need to study so much lah, think of business ok, dun alway think of being a slave of others and books and get exploited by bosses, profs and lecturers. Think of how to start your own banking firm lah, like u can start with money exchange, remittance and saving for foreign workers and expatriate here, it a good business u know, because foreigners are increasing. Then later u hv settled down, expand it, become a legal money lender with Cr and Db, earn interest and start to buy asset and lands, that is how OCBC, UOB and other local bank bosses come about ya.

don't waste your time doing things that u don't like. the prime time are your youth (20s - 30s), if u spent it pursuing monetary rewards instead of passion, u r wasting your life away. at the end you will have lots of money but non of the joy. if u were to be able to retire in your 40s, your physical strength might not be able to allow you to pursue your passion further. e.g. travelling, sports, etc
the finance/banking prestige now is quite similar to getting a scholarship 10 years back. now a scholarship is no big deal. so do consider how you want to live your life as you look back at it.
i pursued my passion and after a few years is able to reap the same monetary rewards as those in the banking service. looking back i really enjoyed the years travelling to the many countries and having a work-life balance. so think about it. -
